Using a variety of modalities including individual and family interview, mental health assessments, consultation, crisis intervention, patient and family education, community outreach and advocacy, our Social Workers work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to perform assessments aimed at developing and implementing a plan of intervention, which addresses education, coping and compliance.

Through in-depth psychosocial assessments, our Social Workers identify child and family strengths, stressors, problem-solving abilities, dynamics, interactions, attitudes, feelings and cultural issues in relation to the needs of the acute patient and family visit in the Emergency Department. The Social Worker will identify and make referrals to appropriate supports and resources and assist families in accessing financial assistance programs when necessary.
 


Qualifications
  • Current Certificate of Registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers

  • Masters of Social Work degree from an accredited School of Social Work

  • Demonstrated understanding of the multitude of issues that bring a child and family to a pediatric emergency department.

  • Demonstrated excellence in interview skills and ability to provide comprehensive and timely psychosocial, mental health and risk assessments, and then develop and undertake a plan of action based on the assessment

  • Familiarity with the Mental Health Act, Consent to Treatment Act, Substitute Decisions Act and Child and Family Services Act

     

  • Candidates will be selected based on their knowledge and minimum two (2) years’ experience in the field of crisis intervention, pediatric mental health, and Pediatric Emergency Department social work.

     

  • Well-developed strengths in advocacy and collaboration both within a crisis-focused team and with external resources, and knowledge and experience with crisis prevention and intervention models

     

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in culturally competent practice, and extensive understanding of the importance of health equity, diversity, and inclusion in the delivery of healthcare services

     

  • Knowledge of the network of community services and resources and an understanding of health care delivery systems outside of the hospital environment

     

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skills

     

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and efficient time management

     

  • Demonstrated ability to function as a collaborative member of the interdisciplinary health care team and take initiative and leadership when appropriate

     

  • Demonstrated belief in lifelong learning and evidence-based practice and a commitment to remain abreast of current literature and relevant developments in clinical practice
