The OTA/PTA supervises or assists patients with therapeutic interventions, in an individual and/or group setting, under the direction of a registered Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist. The OTA/PTA role will include but is not limited to ADL retraining, mobility, transfers and gait training, therapeutic exercise, educating regarding use of assistive devices, kitchen and homemaking interventions, cognitive/perceptual retraining, wheelchair training, therapeutic groups, documentation, maintenance of therapeutic supplies and equipment as well as other duties as required. Will have the opportunity to become involved as a preceptor for OTA/PTA students from accredited community colleges.


Qualifications

1. Graduate of a recognized, accredited OTA/PTA certificate or diploma program from an approved Community College
2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the field of active surgical orthopedic and general internal medicine with populations such as fractured hips, and medical patients awaiting long term care placement
3. Demonstrated safe work practices and independently and also as an effective team member in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
4. Is self-directed, accepts and carries out assignments independently, sets and adjusts priorities and organizes self and work areas in a timely, effective and flexible manner
5. Demonstrated the ability to do repetitive reaching, bending, pushing, lifting and demonstrate good body mechanics
6. Communicates effectively (verbally, non-verbally and written) with staff, patients and families, using a patient and family-centred approach which applies concepts of communication, collaboration and responsiveness
7. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, organizational, initiation, problem-solving and clinical reasoning skills.
8. Demonstrated ability to communicate a clear understanding of the OTA/PTA role and OT/PT services to client/family/staff as required
9. Demonstrated ability to prioritize shared workload among several therapists
10. Relevant recent work experience with medicine and/or ortho population preferred
11. Related continuing education, advance training and upgraded skills an asset
