OT-PT Assistant

As a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team, the OTA/PTA will assist the Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist on the unit in the provision of patient care, in both individual and group formats, in order to meet the varied needs of the patients and their families. The OTA/PTA will practice under the guidance and direction of a qualified occupational therapist and/or physiotherapist. In addition, some equipment maintenance and procurement, organizational duties and documentation are required. The OTA/PTA may have the opportunity to serve as a preceptor for OTA/PTA students and/or active involvement in other student educational activities. The OTA/PTA functions according to the job description for OTA/PTA within the program.

Qualifications

1. Post-secondary Certificate or Diploma from an accredited community college in both PT and OT Assistant programs
2. Demonstrated knowledge and recent hospital experience in the field of Hematology/Oncology and within a multidisciplinary team setting
3. Demonstrated knowledge of adaptive equipment and wheelchairs, grading and adapting activities, safe ambulation and transfer techniques, mobility aids, therapeutic exercise, a variety of OT and PT treatment modalities, self-care strategies to maintain/improve functional independence
4. Demonstrated effective and timely communication skills, both written and verbal

5. Demonstrated ability to communicate a clear understanding of the OTA/PTA role and OT/PT services to client/family/staff as required
6. Ability to function collaboratively as an integral member of the healthcare team in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
7. Demonstrated ability to organize, plan work, problem solve and work independently within assigned caseload
8. Demonstrated sound professional judgment and initiative based on training and experience
9. Demonstrated flexibility, communication, problem solving, organizational skills and the ability to prioritize shared workload among several therapists
10. Demonstrated importance of patient and family-centered care approach in practice 
11. Demonstrated ability to express respect and sensitivity towards patient population and families
12. Physically able to meet the demands of the job including walking, standing for prolonged periods of time, repetitive stooping, kneeling, reaching, lifting plus transferring heavy patients
