Occupational Therapist

As a vital member of an acute interdisciplinary healthcare team, the Occupational Therapist coordinates, assesses and provides care to patients with a variety of in-patient and outpatient burns-and-trauma related needs. The OT will communicate and collaborate effectively with the interdisciplinary team members, families and community agencies in the provision of care. The Occupational Therapist is also responsible for scar control for outpatient burn survivors and patients with post-surgical hypertrophic scarring. In addition, the OT may become involved with the Insurance Industry and other related agencies regarding traumatic injuries and claims. Some coverage to other clinical areas will be provided as needed on a priority basis for sick/vacation relief. Other responsibilities include active participation in initiatives that support patient care, clinical practice, education and research as approved by the Clinical Manager in conjunction with the Chief of Occupational Therapy Practice.

 


Qualifications

1. Graduate of an approved School of Occupational Therapy
2. Current Registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
3. Relevant experience, knowledge and clinical skills in the provision of evidence-based occupational therapy practice and
management of clients with burns, and other traumatic conditions
4. Well-developed knowledge of the roles of occupational therapy services, and other professions in the care of these
patients and a thorough understanding of the acute and post-acute care continuum related to this population
5. Basic knowledge and understanding of manual wheelchair seating
6. Ability to work collaboratively with and supervise Occupational Therapist Assistants/Physiotherapist Assistants (OTA/
PTAs)
7. Demonstrated leadership ability
8. Demonstrated excellent communication (oral and written), collaboration and interpersonal skills
9. Self-directed, flexible, independent practitioner with well developed critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills
10. Solid ability to prioritize and manage caseload resulting in optimization of patient care & access to occupational
therapy services
11. Ability to facilitate timely, safe and effective discharge to post-acute care environments
12. Demonstrated ability to work successfully in an interdisciplinary team environment
13. Advanced splinting and positioning skills preferred
