Position Details
Length of Assignment: 7 months (with possibility of extension)
Job SummaryThis is a temporary, thirty-seven and one half (37.5) hour per week position effective January 26th, 2026, ending August 28th, 2026 with a possibility of extension. The successful candidate would be eligible to participate in the Flexible Work Arrangement Program.
Reporting to the Manager, Strategic Communications, the Temporary Communications Officer will be responsible for:
• Providing communications counsel, issues management and tactical support to Board Departments and schools.
• Preparing messaging that may be sensitive, timely and/or confidential in nature.
• Responding to and coordinating communication with the media.
• Assist with writing and editing Board reports, and Board-wide presentations delivered to key stakeholders.
• Working with the Director, senior staff and board of trustees to write, edit and oversee the development of online and
print publications, offering advice on best communication practices from both content and design perspectives.
• Writing and editing news releases, media alerts, and web content for the Board’s website, and sharing content with
media outlets.
• Providing media support to school and board staff.
• Responding to media queries, coordinating interviews, and preparing statements.
• Creating and overseeing digital display advertisements on local news websites, and print ads submitted to local papers
to advertise HCDSB programs, new initiatives, and school registration.
• Overseeing and providing tactical support in the development of Board-wide videos used for marketing and
promotional purposes.
• Implementing and ensuring that all print and web-based publications adhere to the Board’s branding and visual identity.
• Creating presentations, webinars, and other materials to share with external audiences.
• Monitor the Board’s social media channels and manage the Board’s online outreach and social media strategy.
• Media relations and social media training to school and Board staff.
Qualifications / Experience
• Degree or diploma in Communications Studies, Public Relations, Marketing or a related field.
• A minimum of five (5) years demonstrated field experience, with an emphasis on communications expertise, marketing
and digital marketing expertise, media, social media, and web-based platforms.
• Experience working in a school or school board setting.
• Experience working in a highly confidential environment.
• Strong interpersonal, analytical, problem solving, organizational and verbal and written communications skills.
• Strong understanding of issues in communication related to equity, anti-racism, anti-Black racism, and human rights
and social justice in the context of an educational environment.
• Strong skills in social media strategy development, implementation and training.
• Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite (PC and Mac environment - Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) Microsoft Suite of
products and other applicable software packages, web-based plat forms including WordPress and Microsoft
SharePoint.
• Strong skills in Microsoft Windows-based software (Word, PowerPoint, Publisher).
• Print design, Basic HTML, CSS and knowledge of web design processes would an asset.
