Gillam School is a thriving Nursery to Grade 12 school located 304 km north of Thompson on the Fox Lake Cree Nation Traditional Territory. Gillam is a prosperous community with a beautiful, newly-renovated recreation centre that includes: skating and curling rinks, a community library, a movie theatre and a fitness centre. The community is a recreational paradise offering fishing, boating, hunting, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and hiking trails. Other amenities include a hospital, pharmacy, Co-op grocery store and hair salon. There are also daily flights to Winnipeg.

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Education Degree and Valid Manitoba Teaching Certificate (or eligibility for)

Fluency in the Cree language both written and oral

Knowledge of Indigenous culture, history, and the Truth and Reconciliation calls to action

Previous teaching experience

Familiarity with the Kindergarten to Grade 12 Aboriginal Languages and Culture: Manitoba Curriculum Framework of Outcomes

A team player committed to the belief that all students can learn

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide instruction to increase students’ ability to understand, speak and use a written form of the Cree language and improve cultural knowledge

Incorporate Indigenous Way of Life and ways of learning into classroom instruction

Gather resources to support language instruction including localized knowledge/speakers

Establish community connections with the local associations and organizations that promote Indigenous Languages and Way of Life

Assist in the coordination of school cultural activities in cooperation with fellow teachers and community knowledge keepers
