Job Summary

We are seeking an innovative physician to join our team as a Site Medical Director (SMD) for Royal Columbian Hospital. The Site Medical Director will build and support a culture of patient and care-team safety and clinical effectiveness, where the patient and family are the centre of clinical system design. Your leadership will help us move complex change across our health service system to support broad transformation objectives. As a consensus builder, you lead by example and understand how to address site needs within the broader context of the health delivery system and multiple service delivery requirements. This position reports to the Vice President, Regional Hospitals and Health Services with professional accountability to the Vice President, Medicine.

 

Royal Columbian Hospital is a provincial referral hospital (stroke/cardiac/trauma/neurosurgery) located in New Westminster, BC, with 439 acute beds, with nearly 80,000 visits annually. Services include 24/7 emergency, outpatient, ambulatory care and a range of inpatient services which are supported by a range of community services. Some referral services include a variety of medical and surgical specialties which include mental health and substance use, internal medicine, cardiology, gastroenterology, nephrology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, gynecology, urology, ophthalmology, plastic surgeries and a very well-established maternal, infant, child/youth program offering levels one, two and three obstetrical care, levels one and two nursery, neonatal intensive care and pediatric inpatient service.

In addition to being one of the busiest hospitals in the province, Royal Columbian also serves as a clinical academic campus providing training to University of British Columbia (UBC) medical students as well as residents from some UBC residency programs.

 

Royal Columbian Hospital Redevelopment Project

The Royal Columbian Hospital redevelopment project is a multi-million, multi-phase project that will increase the hospital’s capacity, introduce advanced medical technologies and improve the health care environment for patients, staff and medical staff.

The improvements will upgrade and expand the hospital through more beds and operating rooms, new technology and equipment to improve timely access to tests and procedures to support better health outcomes.

Key Areas of Involvement:
  • Responsible and accountable for providing leadership in all aspects of planning, operation and evaluation for activities of medical staff within the hospital and providing leadership to the Heads of Department (Local) who report jointly to their respective Regional Department Heads
  • Share accountability and responsibility with the Executive Director for site budget and operational planning, coordination and direction of care, patient access and transitions, and building an inter-disciplinary team at the hospital to deliver quality patient centred care across the care
  • Ensure appropriate standards of care and practice, based on regional standards, are developed and implemented across the inter-disciplinary
  • Advocate for resources and other supports at the hospital (including but not limited to professional practice, quality, Health and Business Analytics) to support quality improvement and patient safety
  • Work collaboratively with EMD Physician Partnerships and Development to ensure that all contracts with physicians are managed effectively and in compliance with FH policies and procedures, and processes addressing credentialing and discipline of members of the Medical Staff are in place and complied
  • In partnership with the ED develop operational plans and budgets, including capital and operating budget, for the hospital to meet clinical needs of the
  • Develop strategies to enhance Medical Staff member’s understanding of the budget process and support involvement of Medical Staff members throughout the
  • Provide leadership through mentoring, coaching, and modeling a collaborative working style and leading by influence and
  • Provide leadership to support and coordinate the requirements of programs operating within the hospital (connecting with regional program leaders on a regular basis), and escalate clinical delivery issues as
  • Provide leadership to support and ensure a culturally safe and inclusive workplace.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Eligibility for membership on the Fraser Health Medical Staff
  • Five (5) years’ leadership experience within the healthcare sector
  • A Master’s degree in health administration or business administration is preferred and experience in hospital based leadership is highly desirable
  • Additional leadership training is preferred
  • Experience with budgetary and operational planning is desirable.

Time Commitment: 0.7 FTE
