Detailed Overview

Reporting to the Site Coordinator, Medical Imaging, the Radiology Support Aide practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice as well as utilizing a client and family centered care model and the vision and values of the department within Fraser Health (FH).

The Radiology Support Aide works under general supervision and acts as a member of an integrated acute care team to assist in the delivery of client care. Performs duties such as transporting clients to and from required areas using stretchers and wheelchairs, assisting technical and nursing staff with the lifting and transferring of clients and providing support to clients with dressing and/or bathroom care needs. Assists technical staff with procedures such as biopsies, to sort, number and label specimens with appropriate medical terminology. Maintains supplies for various carts, cupboards, trays, rooms and storage areas and cleans equipment and supply areas as required within a high volume acute care medical imaging environment. Uses accepted aseptic techniques to pour sterile solutions, open sterile packages, and set up sterile trays as requested by technical and nursing staff. Maintains a clean and safe environment for clients and staff.


Responsibilities

  1. Prepares supplies for procedural examinations by gathering and setting up equipment following basic aseptic technique to pour sterile solutions, open sterile packaging and prepare contrast media such as barium solutions in accordance with the Technologist’s requirements and instructions.
  2. Assists technical and/or nursing staff in procedural rooms by setting up biopsy trays following basic aseptic technique, sorting, numbering and labelling specimens according to appropriate anatomy and accurate medical terminology, handing instruments to the Radiologist and providing support and comfort to the client during the procedure.
  3. Transports clients to and from required areas utilizing prescribed safety techniques as well as mechanical aides such as specialty beds, mobilizers, wheelchairs and stretchers by checking daily schedule for portering information, organizing workload and picking up/moving clients from various locations to ensure prompt arrival at specified location.
  4. Assists with mobilization of clients, as directed by technical and/or nursing staff, by positioning, lifting and/or transferring clients on and off beds, treatment tables, stretchers and wheelchairs following prescribed safety techniques for self and patients and lifting practices such as utilizing mechanical lifts and/or slide boards, as required.
  5. Provides support to clients in waiting and holding areas by assisting with dressing or bathroom care, supplying blankets or bedpans, observing client’s condition and notifying health care professional of any problems or concerns.
  6. Monitors inventories in procedure rooms, utility areas, supply cupboards, carts and outpatient areas by daily reviewing supplies to identify depleting stock, initiating and completing purchase requisitions either online or manually and notifying Supervisor/delegate as applicable. Receives supplies and checks to ensure ordered supplies match those received. Replenishes items such as linens and clinical supplies by unpacking supplies upon receipt and storing in appropriate areas. Tidies supply cupboards, carts, shelves or patient areas when required.
  7. Assists in inventory counts by performing duties such as counting all supply items utilized for client procedure, recording numbers on costing sheets and forwarding to Supervisor for verification and input into computer database for inventory control purposes.
  8. Cleans and maintains wheelchairs and stretchers by checking and replacing linen and/or oxygen/suction supplies on stretchers, spot-cleaning wheeled equipment using disinfectant solution, performing equipment counts and reporting repair requirements to the Supervisor.
  9. Uses personal protective equipment and prepares supply trays for Central Supply room by rinsing equipment, packaging items and checking to ensure all implements are present as noted on accompanying list.
  10. Maintains work area by cleaning items such as ultrasound probes, imaging equipment, procedural trays and personal protective equipment by using disinfectant solution or bleach according to established policies and procedures.
  11. Observes and monitors patient/client progress, symptoms and behavioural changes. Reports significant observations such as discomfort and/or pain, changes in vital signs, skin breakdowns, unusual incidents and/or accidents and feedback from the client into the care planning progress to the Registered Nurse or designate.
  12. Provides assistance in emergent situations to technical and/or nursing staff by notifying applicable personnel of emergent situation, responding to requests for equipment/supplies and relaying information as directed. May be required to initiate life saving techniques until a health care professional arrives on site.
  13. Transports items such as exam results or specimens to and from Radiology, various wards, Pharmacy or Laboratory Medicine.
  14. Performs clerical duties such as answering telephones, arranging additional porter support, and transporting client films and/or requisitions as directed by the Supervisor.
  15. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
  16. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience


Successful graduation from a recognized Health Care Assistant Program and one year’s recent, related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

 

Eligible for registration with the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry.
