We currently have an exciting Casual opportunity for a Pharmacy Assistant IA to join our team at the Downtown Community Health Clinic located in Vancouver, BC.

 

Pharmacy staff rotate through Connections Addictions Clinic and Downtown Community Health Centre Pharmacies which are located adjacent to one another on Powell Street in Vancouver. These positions are for individuals who have compassion and empathy for a very vulnerable and marginalized population with the aim of decreasing the stigma of addiction and support the client journey at a pace and approach that works for them.

Detailed Overview

Performs technical duties in the Pharmacy such as monitoring, filling, topping up and distributing wardstock and automated unit-dose (AUD) pharmaceuticals, blister and unit-dose packaging, receiving and storing pharmaceuticals, compounding of pharmaceutical products, and processing returned medications. Maintains inventory supplies and stock of items. Processes medication orders and updates computerized patient profiles. Performs final product and label check for accuracy and completeness of non Centralized Intravenous Admixture (CIVA) medications that have been packaged and/or filled by technicians. Maintains a variety of records and prepares reports.


Responsibilities


  1. Prepares a variety of medications for distribution to nursing units; counts and measures drugs according to packaging lists and medication orders, packages and arranges medications into containers for delivery to nursing units.
  2. Delivers medications and supplies to nursing units, out-patient and satellite pharmacies Arranges transportation to pick up and deliver medications and supplies requests to and from other sites.
  3. Receives, checks, and shelves incoming pharmaceuticals and supplies according to established procedures. Checks received goods against packing slip and/or purchase order, and identifies damaged, missing goods, backorders, and discrepancies. Maintains related records.
  4. Performs final product and label check of non-CIVA medications that have been packaged and/or filled by technicians in accordance with certification requirements.
  5. Processes medication orders to update patient profiles; receives physician order sheets and enters pertinent information into computerized pharmacy system for verification by a pharmacist.
  6. Pre-packages tablet and capsule medications from bulk containers into unit-dose packages and blister-cards for dispensing using appropriate machines; determines quantities utilizing pre-set inventory data sheets, prepares and affixes computer labels, counts and pours medications for verification by a pharmacist or certified checking technician.
  7. Processes requisitions for narcotics and controlled drugs to ensure user areas receive required items; reviews requisitions for completeness, issues narcotic and/or controlled drugs, enters quantities into user stock record book, delivers items and obtains required signatures. Performs daily narcotic count and investigates discrepancies. Reports unresolved discrepancies to the supervisor.
  8. Maintains inventory levels on nursing units, clinics and assigned work areas, according to pre-determined stock levels; counts and checks stock against set inventory levels, issues, delivers, puts away and rotates stock from pharmacy and completes required documentation. Utilizes automated dispensing systems as required. Checks expiry dates and returns expired drugs to the pharmacy purchasing area for action.
  9. Checks wardstock and pharmaceutical products for packaging errors, product defects such as packaging and labelling problems, expiry dates, damaged, discoloured or contaminated product. Reports errors, defects and products unsuitable for use to the supervisor.
  10. Processes medications no longer required by the nursing units to ensure unused or outdated medication are either re-processed or disposed of; receives medications from nursing units and enters drug type and quantity information into the computerized pharmacy system, places drugs back in stock for re-issue or disposes unusable medications according to approved procedures.
  11. Maintains a variety of computerized and manual records including drug usage, medication use and costs and statistical workload information. Gathers information from a variety of sources and prepares reports for supervisory staff.
  12. Compounds medications into prepackaged dosage forms for distribution to the nursing units as floor stock or personal prescriptions according to approved procedures for verification by a pharmacist or certified checking technician. Maintains compounding and quality control records.
  13. Compounds, measures and fills approved containers with alcohol and non-alcohol containing solutions for verification by a pharmacist or certified checking technician. Maintains inventory stock levels of ethyl alcohol and all compounded solutions and checks that labelling on all products conforms to WHMIS standards.
  14. Performs a variety of clerical duties such as data entry of related information, answering telephones and filing of information such as prescriptions.
  15. Performs a variety of routine cleaning and maintenance duties such as cleaning shelves, equipment and counters and keeping work area tidy.
  16. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Grade 12, graduation from a recognized Pharmacy Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
