The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project is a multi-phase project that will transform the hospital into a modernized medical and surgical health care campus. Phase one is slated to open in spring 2025 and phase two in 2030.

Detailed Overview

In accordance with the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, the Health Care Assistant works in the Emergency Department under the direction of a nurse, in cooperation with the interprofessional care team, and following established care plans and person-centered care. As directed by the nurse, performs procedures such as measuring temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure and oxygen saturation; obtains patient weights as required. Obtains specimens such as urine and stool and performs tests such as urine dipstick and urine pregnancy tests. Provides personal care to patients such as assisting with toileting, bathing, skin and hair care, oral hygiene, grooming, dressing, changing bed linen, patient positioning and mobilization. Documents on patient charts in accordance with established procedures, observes and reports patient progress, assists with meals, transports patients, and performs related general duties.


Responsibilities


  1. As directed by the nurse, measures temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure and oxygen saturation; records and reports problems and/or changes to the designated nurse.
  2. As directed by the nurse, obtains specimens such as urine and stool.
  3. Observes and reports patient progress including anticipated/unanticipated patient responses to care, patient discomfort and/or pain, skin breakdowns, and unusual incidents and/or accidents to the designated nurse.
  4. Provides personal care to patients such as assisting patients with toileting, bathing, skin and hair care, oral hygiene, grooming, dressing, changing bed linen, patient positioning and mobilization.
  5. As directed by the nurse, performs point of care urinalysis and urine pregnancy testing. Maintains records of test results.
  6. Documents on patient charts for activities of daily living and other observations in accordance with established procedures.
  7. Assists patients with meals by completing menu slips, checking meals to ensure the maintenance of dietary restrictions, serving and collecting meal trays and feeding designated patients.
  8. Transports patients using mechanical aids such as wheelchairs, lifts and stretchers.
  9. Assists in the admission, discharge and transfer of patients including the transfer/care of clothing and personal belongings.
  10. Sets up charts for new patients and attaches documents to charts as directed by the nurse and according to established protocols.
  11. Performs a variety of related general duties such as answering the phone, stocking and maintaining storage areas, ordering supplies through stores or through established procedures, transporting specimens, maintaining and locating inventory of equipment, cleaning and caring for equipment such as commodes/bed pans, and maintaining tidy patient rooms and patient care areas.
  12. Attends internal/external committees, patient care meetings and training sessions as assigned.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 


Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience


Grade 10 plus graduation from a recognized Health Care Assistant program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

 

Current Food Safe Level One, as required.
