General Surgeon – Acute Care

Job Summary

The Division of General Surgery at Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) and the Fraser Heath Authority are looking to hire an acute care general surgeon to join the group. It is expected that the applicant will be proficient in all aspects of acute care general surgery. 

 

As a member of the Fraser Health medical staff, you will participate in the University of British Columbia (UBC) medical education program and are expected to apply for a clinical faculty appointment in the Division of General Surgery, UBC. Other surgical specialties include urology, orthopedics, ENT, plastics, thoracic surgery and OBGYN.

Provisional license is acceptable and supervision available for US board certified physicians, if applicable.

Surrey Memorial Hospital is the second largest hospital in the province at 650 beds and the province’s busiest emergency department seeing over 180,000 visits annually. Surrey is the largest city by land area and second most populated in Metro Vancouver. 

 

There are currently seven full-time elective general surgeons and another full time ACS general surgeon in the group servicing the busy catchment area of Fraser South and Surrey. Call is structured using an acute care surgery model. Each successful candidate is anticipated to do 12-16 weeks as attending ACS surgeon (weekday daytime call and weekend 48-hour call) in addition to 1 in 9 overnight weekday calls. During each call week, there are five half-days of urgent/emergent OR time that the acute surgeon will use to manage urgent general surgery cases. Additionally, there is daily after-hours emergent surgical time to be used by the on-call surgeon. No resources will be made available for elective surgery or elective endoscopy. The successful candidate is also expected to provide/arrange outpatient follow up for acute care patients with the assistance of current SMH general surgery staff. A MOCAP level 1 agreement provides an on-call stipend.
