We have the perfect Temporary Full-Time opportunity for a Clinical Pharmacist - Educator to join our team at Forensic Psychiatric Hospital located in Coquitlam, BC.   This position is available until July 2030.

 

“This role is primarily based at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital (FPH), but may require travel to other BCMHSUS sites to support education and clinical initiatives.”

As a Clinical Pharmacist you will work to provide the following services to our patients:

 

  • Individualized pharmacotherapy
  • Counselling patients about their medication therapy
  • Work in collaboration with physicians, and other health care providers to develop implement and monitor therapeutic plans
  • Assist in the development of drug therapy guidelines for individual disease conditions
  • Prepare and submit for publication in professional journals, case studies and articles that share new knowledge
  • Acts as department resource person within your assigned area
  • Participate in medication use evaluations, quality improvement initiatives and clinical drug trials
  • Provides mentorship and supervision to pharmacy students, residents and new staff.
  • Additionally, we would depend on your expertise to ensure that prescriptions are validated and dispensed accurately; and that medication safety concerns, working with the health care team to resolve discrepancies and/or problems are resolved expediently; your professional practice activities shall be documented proficiently.

Detailed Overview

The Clinical Pharmacist - Educator (CPE) provides support for the education, orientation and training of pharmacist staff in Lower Mainland Pharmacy Services (LMPS) for the majority of the time, in order to maintain standards of care, quality improvement and staff development. The CPE provides clinical and educational support to pharmacists and other pharmacy staff; plans, implements and evaluates educational programs; assists with the development and roll out of new clinical practices; and provides staff with information on new or changed pharmacy procedures and practices related to orientation, precepting and clinical practice. This is done in collaboration with the Pharmacy Coordinator(s). The CPE consults, confers and collaborates with other healthcare providers regarding related clinical education, training and/or other requirements and gathers information for ongoing quality improvement and review.


Responsibilities


  1. Collaborates with Pharmacy Coordinator(s) to identify pharmacy staff learning needs and assists in the implementation and evaluation of educational strategies and programs through teaching, coaching, orienting and/or training of pharmacists; develops, implements and evaluates education materials related to the ongoing roll out of new policies, procedures, skills and competencies; works with the Pharmacy Coordinators to implement changes, as required.
  2. Identifies education priorities that meet staff learning needs, in collaboration with the Pharmacy Coordinator(s); completes learning needs assessments of individuals or groups of individuals to assist in determining the appropriate training requirements and learning objectives; provides applicable education and training to pharmacists to ensure they are familiar with applicable standards, clinical guidelines, professional practice resources, practice-based research procedures, and related education materials.
  3. Provides leadership, direction and guidance on pharmacy education and research; and related special projects initiatives by providing training, orientation, planning, implementation and evaluation of continuing professional education, in collaboration with Pharmacy Coordinator(s).
  4. Arranges, plans and conducts formal training sessions, as requested to respond to the employee’s identified learning/training/clinical needs; provides resources and other materials to clinical areas and external facilities as required; collaborates with Pharmacy Coordinator(s) in the development of education strategies and innovations based on LMPS goals and evidence-based best pharmacy practice.
  5. Maintains records of staff orientation and instruction.
  6. Coordinates new staff orientation for pharmacists and other designated staff with Pharmacy Coordinator(s) to ensure staff are familiar with pharmacy practice standards, clinical guidelines, professional practice resources, education materials and modules; communicates and consults with Coordinators to gather and share information and coordinate educational sessions.
  7. Reviews and evaluates literature, consults with other professionals and attends relevant educational programs to maintain knowledge of current developments and contributes to the improvement of pharmacy services; actively promotes continuous learning among staff.
  8. Participates and leads quality improvement initiatives and related audits and actively promotes practices to ensure the safe delivery of client/patient/resident care and improve service.
  9. Participates on clinical committees and working groups, as required to provide input and recommendations to the site pharmacy leadership team.
  10. Provides Clinical Pharmacy and drug distribution services in assigned areas in order to maintain practice skills and proficiency.
  11. Performs other related duties, as assigned. 

Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience

 

Current registration as a Pharmacist with the College of Pharmacists of BC. Successful completion of an approved Hospital Pharmacy Residency program supplemented with three (3) years recent related hospital pharmacy experience, including one year pharmacy/leadership and staff education experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Broad knowledge of the established provincial standards of practice and guidelines for clinical practitioners.
