Detailed Overview

Reporting to the Coordinator, Access & Bed Utilization, the Bed Booking Clerk maintains bed utilization information; identifies and allocates patient bed assignment of acute care patients; liaises with physicians and appropriate staff; verifies bed availability; performs data entry for discharge/transfer requests; obtains admission information as required.
Responsibilities


  1. Maintains bed utilization information by reviewing and updating the bed map, waiting lists, patient transfers and discharges at designated site(s).
  2. Allocates bed assignment by identifying patient requirements, including elective OR slate, checking availability and assigning beds according to nursing unit standards.
  3. Communicates/liaises with nursing units and other departments within the hospital as well as physicians and other hospitals/agencies, with regard to bed availability, patient placement and bed utilization.
  4. Communicates with BC Bedline as needed, referring appropriate calls to Access Coordinator or Shift Coordinator. Updates BC Bedline census as per current policy.
  5. Performs discharges and transfer requests in the computer.
  6. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Grade 12 and three years' recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to keyboard at 40 w.p.m.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 
  • Ability to deal effectively with others.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
