Job Description

A Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) role is a temporary, preceptor-led position designed for Internationally Educated Nurses or those returning to practice to gain Ontario clinical experience. Participants work (usually 140-450 hours) under supervision to demonstrate CNO standards, performing resident assessments, medication administration, and care planning.
Key Job Responsibilities
Supervised Care: Perform patient assessments, implement nursing interventions, and assist with activities of daily living (bathing, feeding, ambulation) under the direction of a preceptor.
Medication Administration: Safely administer medications in accordance with facility policies and under supervision.
Documentation & Assessment: Complete accurate documentation of resident care and identify changes in condition.
Patient Safety & Infection Control: Adhere to infection control policies, safety standards, and CNO practice standards.
Team Collaboration: Participate in team meetings, communicate effectively, and request assistance when needed.
Learning Plan: Complete a structured learning plan and participate in mid-term and final evaluations to demonstrate competence.
Requirements and Qualifications
CNO Eligibility: Must have a SPEP eligibility letter from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
Role Status: Non-registered (holding a temporary "learner" status).
Certifications: Often requires a current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) or CPR certification.
Skills: Demonstrated foundational nursing knowledge, critical thinking, and communication skills.
Work Environment
Settings: long-term care homes.
Supervision: A designated RN or RPN preceptor provides guidance and evaluates performance.
Duration: Minimum of 140 hours to 450 hours, depending on the employer.
