Job Description
Laboratory Technician will be responsible for providing basic technical support, preparation, and analysis within the Food Microbiology Laboratory. This is a deadline-based, high-pressure work environment with ongoing projects for a variety of clients. The Laboratory Technician will have some experience (including academic) in handling media used in microbiological analyses and will be able to work independently with minimal supervision. The incumbent must demonstrate a willingness to learn, on top of being well-organized, flexible, and capable of working with analysts in a fast-paced environment, sometimes under pressure, while remaining proactive, resourceful, and efficient. A high level of work ethic, communication, and professionalism is crucial to this role.
The Laboratory Technician must:
- Be capable of operating and calibrating common lab equipment (i.e. pH meter);
- Be familiar with traditional microbiological tests and the associated media;
- Be proficient at data retrieval and interpretation of routine analysis or tests;
- Have basic troubleshooting skills, both with instruments and methods;
- Ability to use equipment necessary in microbiology testing (i.e. serological pipettes);
- Be able to work under GMP and GLP guidelines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Media preparation;
- GMP Documentation: Ensuring accurate reporting in lab books.
- Quality control of prepared media;
- Inventory of dehydrated media and reagents;
- Disposal of contaminated waste;
- Ensuring laboratory cleanliness;
- Cleaning and sterilization of glassware.
Qualifications
Education
- A B.Sc. degree preferably in Microbiology, or diploma in related field;
- A solid background and understanding of Microbiology;
- Computer proficiency – Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
Experience
- 1 year working with microbiological techniques;
- Experience working with in a GMP environment;
- Experience working in a contract laboratory considered an asset.
- Experience in the use of an autoclave considered an asset.

- A good command of English is necessary;

- Ability to work independently, while supporting a collaborative, team-based department;

- Demonstrate satisfactory work performance and attendance record;
- Display a high level of professionalism;
- Willingness to learn with the ability to retain information quickly and apply knowledge to various scenarios.
Working Conditions: This position will be working in a laboratory environment where standing is required for greater than 50% of the time to work at the bench for analyses. Light lifting requirements of no more than 20 kg. Evening and weekend shift work may be required.
