Professor of Geomechanics and Underground Space Engineering

The _ École de technologie supérieure ( _ ÉTS ) is a rapidly growing engineering and technology university located in downtown Montréal. Our Construction Engineering Department

The Department offers several undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs. In addition to the bachelor's degree program in construction engineering, graduate students can choose from programs in environmental studies, construction management, urban engineering, infrastructure, and many others. These programs are supervised by professors with diverse and complementary expertise, allowing for the development of multidisciplinary approaches.

Job Responsibilities

The department is seeking to recruit a professor with a background in engineering related to the field listed below. Candidates must have general knowledge in the field of construction Engineering.

_ _Geomechanics and Underground Space Engineering__

A doctoral degree and at least 5 years of relevant professional experience in the construction and/or mining sectors in Canada, or comparable international experience.

Your expertise should be focused on one or more of the following research fields:

  • Rock mechanics and rock engineering;

  • Geomechanics;

  • Underground space engineering;

  • Rock excavation;

  • Ground control;

  • Deep rock foundations;

  • Tunnel construction;

  • Management of mining structure construction;

  • Management of tunnel construction;

  • Monitoring and prevention of geohazards in rock masses.

Depending on your expertise and research interests, you may join the team at the LG4 laboratory.

Job Description

As part of a dynamic research team, you will be expected to:

  • Teach at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels in fields related to engineering and construction engineering;

  • Provide academic supervision to graduate students;

  • Develop research programs;

  • Apply for funding and grants, particularly from Quebec, Canadian, or international government agencies, industry, municipalities, and foundations;

  • Carry out subsidized or contract research projects for industry and workplaces;

  • Report the developments, results and impact of your scientific research.

Requirements
  • Have a doctorate (Ph.D.) in a field relevant to the position, or be close to obtaining it;

  • Be a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec ( OIQ ) or a Canadian professional order of engineering, or be eligible for membership and take the necessary steps to become a member before submitting your application for tenure;

  • Have research experience in collaboration with industry or industrial experience in R&D;

  • Demonstrate excellent skills in training highly qualified employees through research projects and teaching;

  • Be fluent in spoken and written French in accordance with the Politique linguistique of ÉTS or be willing to learn French and begin a Francization process facilitated by ÉTS.

Remuneration

We are seeking applications for a position leading to tenure, which is open to all academic ranks. Tenured faculty members may be considered in accordance with the internal tenure process in effect at ÉTS. Tenure, the 2025-2026 salary scale, and benefits are determined according to the standards of the Collective Agreement of the Association des professeurs de l'ÉTS (APÉTS) in effect.
