Position Overview:

The Indigenous Education Consultant role within the Department of Indigenous Learning Services is to lead and support Division initiatives that advance Indigenous ways of knowing, doing, and being. The successful incumbent will work collaboratively with school administrators, Division consultants, and other system personnel to integrate Indigenous perspectives into instructional content and professional development. This role is pivotal in bridging current and future-oriented research, theory, and practice to enhance educational outcomes and support Truth and Reconciliation in the Division. This position will commence on August 28, 2025, unless otherwise stated, and will incorporate a trial first year.

This is an open position. Applicants must have experience teaching the advertised subject areas/programs; a minimum of five years’ experience working with Indigenous students is preferred. Experience at multiple levels and in multiple teaching contexts is preferred.

The consultant will provide comprehensive expertise to support the implementation of Indigenous Education, including developing and executing plans for Truth and Reconciliation, offering resources, and creating staff development opportunities. The position involves providing on-site assistance and advice to school administrators and staff, ensuring the effective implementation of Indigenous Education resources and strategies.

Additionally, the consultant will collaborate with the Learning Services Department to support Division goals, priorities, projects, and initiatives related to Truth and Reconciliation. This role requires an educational leader with strong writing, research, and presentation skills, capable of working in collaborative teams with other professionals and community partners.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Research, develop, and execute plans for curriculum implementation that include resource and staff development with incorporating Indigenous ways of knowing, doing and being.
  • Research and recommend wise practices in Indigenous Education re: programming, differentiated learning, strength-based programming, and responsive and flexible learning environments.
  • Support educators in integrating Indigenous ways of knowing into their teaching.
  • Create resources to support staff and student learning, recognizing Indigenous ways of knowing, doing, and being.
  • Provide on-site assistance to administrators and school staff in implementing Truth and Reconciliation initiatives as they relate to student achievement, school growth plans, and the Division Plan for Continuous Growth.
  • Support school and Division events and initiatives focused on Indigenous Education.
  • Promote a strength-based approach in working with Indigenous students.
  • Collaborate with teachers and Learning Services to ensure students see themselves reflected in their learning materials.
  • Build capacity for Truth and Reconciliation through school initiatives supporting Indigenous Education.
  • Procure and support the use of effective resources for pedagogical practices.
  • Act as a liaison between the division and organizations within the educational community.
  • Collaborate as a team member of Indigenous Learning Services to support division and department goals, priorities, and initiatives.

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Lived experience in Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing.
  • Excellent record as a classroom teacher with strong planning, organizational, collaborative, and pedagogical skills.
  • Ability to design and implement a variety of types of professional learning sessions as required, including but not limited to division-wide professional development events, in-school sessions, residences, and individual coaching.
  • Excellent skills in research and the writing of proposals, reports, and articles.
