The following long-term occasional position is available for secondary teachers currently on the DSBN Secondary Occasional Teacher Roster who are qualified, and secondary teachers who are qualified and in Good Standing with the Ontario College of Teachers.

Understanding that to do this effectively we must hire individuals who are also committed to this ideal, carry knowledge and lived experience that will impact, strengthen, and lead them in their work with Indigenous students and families, within our schools.

Reporting to the Student Achievement Leader of Indigenous Well-being, K-12 and Superintendent, the Mnoomin teacher will deliver an Indigenous-specific program grounded in culturally responsive, student-centered teaching practices that honour the lived experiences, identities, and strengths of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students while working within the guidelines of the Ontario Curriculum. Working within the framework of the DSBN Strategic Plan, Walking Together, the Mnoomin Teacher will support the implementation of curriculum, programs, and initiatives that advance equity, student well-being, and improved academic achievement through an Indigenous well-being lens. This role requires a commitment to relationship-building, inclusive learning environments, and the integration of Indigenous knowledges, perspectives, and pedagogies in ways that affirm student voice, culture, and community.

Applicants should demonstrate experience with:

  • Supporting the lived experiences of Indigenous students;
  • Supporting the unique needs of a wide range of students, including those in specialized programs;
  • Demonstrating a strong understanding of the Ontario Curriculum;
  • Demonstrating a strong understanding of student mental health and special education needs;
  • Collaborating effectively with the Indigenous Well‑Being team, school administrators, caregivers, and community agencies to develop and implement individualized plans, including Education and Transition Plans and Safety Plans, that support both academic achievement and personal growth;
  • Developing and implementing tailored instructional strategies, differentiated teaching and learning practices, and ongoing assessment to support student achievement;
  • Integrating experiential learning opportunities that foster student engagement and reflect Indigenous cultures, identities, and perspectives within the learning environment;
  • Applying restorative practice skills to build positive relationships and support conflict resolution for student well‑being;
  • Promoting inclusive, supportive, and positive classroom and school environments that enable every student to succeed and thrive.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support self-identified students in the acquisition, reinforcement and maintenance of academics, communications, social and personal management skills, including student attendance;
  • Support the wellness journey of Indigenous Students from 9-12 and working with families from a holistic perspective;
  • Promote approaches to Indigenous student success that centre Indigenous student well-being;
  • Work with partner agencies and DSBN educators to ensure a coordinated approach to student success, including transition planning and individualized program development;
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress and program effectiveness, using data to support continuous improvement;
  • Plan and deliver curriculum while modelling culturally relevant educational practices;
  • Work collaboratively with the Indigenous Education Well-being team to develop pro-active strategies and programs aimed at enhancing Indigenous student success;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Student Achievement Leader.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • A valid Ontario Teaching Certificate in the Intermediate/Senior division;
  • First Nations, Inuit and Métis Additional Qualification is an asset;
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture and Indigenous ways of knowing is a requirement;
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Knowledge of community resources that assist at-risk youth;
  • Preference will be given to members of groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity including First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, and all other Indigenous peoples.

Experience:

  • Experience working with children, youth, families and community agencies with knowledge of Historical and Intergenerational trauma of Indigenous Peoples.
  • Experience in supporting school engagement and student success;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Indigenous culture, specifically localized territories and communities;
  • Evidence of experience working with local Indigenous community agencies;
  • Evidence of working well with others in a collaborative team approach.

Rate of Pay: Daily rate of pay will be determined according to individual placement on the OSSTF Salary Grid, ranging from $292.52 to $618.48 per day, prorated to the FTE of the assignment
