SUMMARY OF THE POSITION
Person who works directly with service users to ensure their education and rehabilitation in an institutional or external setting, in accordance with the intervention programs established in collaboration with the existing team of professionals, to foster the rehabilitation of individuals and/or their reintegration into society.
She/he applies education techniques involving activities of daily living in organizing, coordinating and conducting programmed activities aimed at helping these individuals learn and acquire appropriate attitudes and behaviors.
She/he observes and analyses the behavior of the service users, participates in assessing their needs and abilities and records their progress by writing up the appropriate reports. She/he is responsible for programming her/his own activities.
SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS
In accordance with the policy and procedures of the CBHSSJB and within the framework of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, Youth Protection Act, S-5. and CMC mandate, the incumbent:
• Designs, animates and evaluates therapeutic activities, teachings and bush activities for youth in a cultural setting;
• Leads traditional activities and teachings both on the land, and when relevant in the Youth Healing Services facilities;
• Ensures the learning and acquisition of Cree belief, values, attitudes and behaviours;
• Contributes to and is directly responsible for appropriate hygiene and safety standards dictated in policies and procedures. This includes taking the necessary steps in the prevention of health and safety difficulties and alerting the appropriate people in the ongoing maintenance and repairs to the Bush Program equipment;
• Provides supervision of youth at all times;
• Communicates and works in partnership with youth, families, Social Services, school, and other significant entities;
• Prioritizes safety in the bush including following proper firearm safety protocols, securing hazardous items, safety around open fires, and open water;
• Respect of bush program and Youth Healing Services equipment, including proper use and storage of items, safe driving practice of motorized vehicles, etc.;
• Participates and attends team meetings;
• Strong knowledge of Cree traditional cultural practices;
• Works at all units at Reception Center as needed when no bush activities are scheduled;
• Organizes and participates in group outings, in and outside the community;
• Carries out recording and report writing as needed and may include daily lodging, bi-weekly progress on youth, healing path plans, court reports and letters to parents;
• Uses formal and informal counselling techniques;
• Works together in collaboration and cooperation with co-workers, family and community to provide whatever is necessary to the well-being and development of the youth;
• Observes confidentiality at all times and for all files.
REQUIREMENTS
Education:
• Must have a college diploma (DEC) in technique of social work or other relevant college discipline of a recognized school by the competent ministry;
• This job also includes the person who, hold a certificate of college studies in Social Work Techniques or Social Assistance Techniques;
• Applicants with an attestation of college studies in Educators in Native Childcare Services or Special Needs Education aboriginal and Inuit children may be considered.
In the absence of applicants meeting the above-mentioned requirements, the following alternative profile may be considered.
Education:
• Must have a completed secondary 5 diploma from a recognized school by a competent ministry.
Experience:
• Must have 3 years of experience in the field of Youth Healing;
• Must have successfully completed the Boscoville Training or its equivalent.
Knowledge and Abilities:
• Good knowledge of legislations Youth Protection Act and Youth Criminal Justice Act is a strong asset;
• Understanding of families and human relations;
• Knowledge of appropriate ways to handle interventions with challenging behavior;
• Ability to identify and analyze client needs;
• Ability to communicate theoretical and practical knowledge, as applied to coaching and training;
• Demonstrated experience in adapting and implementing activities for the clients;
• Experience working with individuals, families and community organizations;
• Knowledge of the issues and context surrounding youth and family development in First Nation northern communities;
• Ability to integrate Eenou/Eeyou (Cree) culture, values, traditions and teachings into programming;
• Knowledge of Cree culture, language, and social/health issues in Eeyou Istchee;
• Knowledge of First Nation health/social service models, trends and issues is an asset;
• Ability to work in collaboration with all colleagues;
• Possess leadership skills in working with individuals and groups;
• Computer skills;
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Language:
• Fluent in Cree and in English;
• Fluency in French is an asset.
Other:
• Valid driver’s permit class 5 meeting the standards of the Société d'assurance automobile du Québec and the Ministère des Transports du Québec;
• Available to travel inside and outside of the Eeyou Istchee territory, as required;
• License in firearm safety, and a boat license (pleasure craft license), an asset;
• This position may include on-call periods.
