The vessel superintendent reports to the Director of Operations at Transport Desgagnés. This individual is responsible for the safety, performance, and compliance of the vessels under their supervision. He/ she ensures efficient management of budgetary, technical, and operational aspects of the fleet, working closely with captains, officers, chief engineers, and other internal stakeholders.

This position can be based in Montréal, Quebec City, or Rimouski.

  • Plan, organize, and oversee vessel operations
  • Ensure compliance with legal, environmental, and safety regulations
  • Manage operating budgets and optimize costs
  • Oversee maintenance, repairs, and dry-dock operations
  • Coordinate inspections, audits, and certifications
  • Identify, analyze, and manage operational risks
  • Implement corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Ensure effective supplier and procurement management
  • Support and engage crew members (performance, training, engagement)
  • Contribute to incident investigations and prevention efforts
  • Chair or participate regularly in various committees

Requested skills

  • Experience as a Chief Engineer, Naval Architect, Mechanical Engineer, or Ship Captain
  • Experience at sea and in marine mechanical repairs, including shipyard environments
  • Experience in the commercial maritime transportation industry
  • Experience with internal and external audits as well as vessel inspections
  • Familiarity with classification societies and applicable regulations
  • Strong communication skills in both English and French (spoken and written)
  • Strong sense of responsibility and commitment
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Proven interpersonal, communication, and writing abilities
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Availability and willingness to travel to vessels (approximately 25% of the time)

 

Proficiency in English is essential for this role due to daily interactions with colleagues, clients, and partners who are primarily located outside Québec, as well as to understand regulatory requirements and technical instructions and specifications.
