About this opportunity:

The Process Control Engineer / Technologist is part of the Operations Technology (OT) Integrity and Integration team. This role will be key to providing engineering support to our established Risk Management programs. This includes alarm management, process control performance, boundary management, operations situation awareness, automated prescriptive and functional safety.

The successful applicant will have an aptitude and curiosity in developing a wide breadth of knowledge within OT, Automation and Process Control fields. With an emphasis on engineering, safety, governance and the ability to manage a variety of initiatives.

This is a full-time employee position based in Calgary with a 50% travel requirement supporting our Canadian Thermal Facilities (Foster Creek, Christina Lake, Lloyd Thermal, and Sunrise)

What you’ll do:

  • Optimize alarm system performance in accordance with Alarm Management Philosophy and design / alarm rationalization / suppression techniques

  • Control loop performance management which includes bad actor identification and problem resolution, loop tuning, and development of process control strategies

  • Implement and maintain control and shutdown strategies on the automation systems

  • Participate in facility-based Process Hazard Analysis as Operations Technology representation

  • Support OT business opportunity identification, development, and project management through the management of change processes and Engineering Work Package (EWP) development

  • Manage FCCL facility I/O allocation program

  • Maintain and develop OT Thermal Recovery specifications, job Instructions, guidelines, knowledge base articles, drawings and procedures

  • Support alarm and control loop management data collection, distribution, integrity, and analysis to drive Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and performance improvements

Who you are:

Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada

  • Engineer or Technologist with a background in Process Control and Instrumentation

  • Must be eligible for registration with APEGA or ASET

  • 2+ years progressive experience related to the role

  • Demonstrated aptitude of maintaining Operations Risk Management Programs - Alarm Management, Control Loop Performance, High Performance HMI and Operating Boundaries

  • Appropriate experience and proficiency in process control, instrumentation, control and safety systems, networking applications, and programming concepts

  • Experience with the Engineering, Operation & Maintenance functions of a Thermal Recovery facility is considered an asset

  • Familiarity with Honeywell, Emerson DeltaV, and Rockwell control systems, as well as OT applications such as historians, ticket-based work management systems, and remote connectivity is considered an asset

  • Experience with Hexagon Plant State Integrity software is considered an asset
