THE ROLE

As a Mess Supervisor (Hospitality Supervisor), you provide an excellent customer experience in our military messes. During big events to every day moments, you will build a rapport with the military community while utilizing your operational and hospitality experience. Military messes are places where Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members come together to socialize and foster morale.

The Mess Supervisor (Hospitality Supervisor) provides hands-on assistance in planning, organizing, supervising mess activities, bar service and mess operations. You will supervise and train employees, prepare work schedules and ensure their accuracy for payroll. You will ensure strict requirements for health, hygiene and safety. You will interact directly with clientele, taking orders and assisting with set up and take down of functions.

Work schedules will be dictated by operational needs and may include evening shifts as well as weekends, particularly during events, receptions, or weddings that may end late at night.

The successful candidate must have knowledge of cost accounting and be able to supervise, train, and participate in the selection of employees. She/he organizes and supervises bar operations as well as mess and military functions, providing any related administrative support. She/he will be responsible for securing cash and inventory, participating in the development and monitoring of budgets and business plans, tracking revenues and expenses, and analyzing any discrepancies. She/he will document and communicate any incidents, accidents, or damage, and assist with set-up and take down of functions, as required.

She/he will also use a point‑of‑sale system, including Maître D, which involves system programming as well as staff training. She/he will be responsible for preparing and tracking sales reports, setting up cash floats, conducting inventory counts, planning for and keeping track of bartender uniforms, ensuring required follow‑ups with MAPAQ, and performing equipment inspection and maintenance (ice machines, refrigerators, glass washers, etc.). Certain details still need to be clarified, particularly whether the Mess Supervisor may replace a bartender during an absence, as well as whether they are eligible to receive tips in general or only when acting as a replacement.

QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED

Education, Certifications and Licenses

College diploma or certificate in Hospitality or Food and Beverage Management, or related field AND some years of experience in hospitality and food and beverage service

Must be of legal age to serve alcohol (Quebec)

Must possess a Responsible Service of Alcohol certification (Quebec)

Valid Driver’s Licence (Quebec), an asset

This is a hybrid position with an assigned work location allowing the employee to work partly from a corporate office and partly from a home office in accordance with the CFMWS Flexible Work Options Policy, and with approval from the direct manager.

PSP: Keep our Canadian Armed Forces operationally ready and their families and military community healthy as part of the team at Personnel Support Programs. Personnel Support Programs contributes to the operational readiness of our Canadian Armed Forces through the provision of fitness, sports, recreation and health promotion programs to military communities across Canada and members while on deployment.

CAF Messes: Offer expertise in management, operational and hospitality services as part of the team that oversees military messes throughout Canada and the world. The military mess is the centre of social life for serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces, where customs, responsibilities and social standards are practiced. Messes are steeped in rich military heritage and tradition. The mess includes food as a central component of events and camaraderie. Personnel Support Program (PSP) Hospitality Services and management are pinnacle to their success.
