Department Overview:

Supervision, Support and Governance (SS&G) is responsible for overseeing risk management and governance across BMO Private Wealth. The National Branch Supervision team, part of the broader SS&G group, provides Tier 1/1a regulatory supervision of Investment Advisor sales activity for BMO Nesbitt Burns branches.

Role Overview:

Reporting to the National Director, Branch Supervision, this role leads the execution of Tier 1 supervision activities and regulatory oversight for BMO Nesbitt Burns branches within the GTA region. The role also includes fulfilling CIRO requirements as the designated Business Location Supervisor for assigned branches and registrants.

Key Responsibilities:

Supervision and Regulatory Oversight

  • Lead the implementation of Tier 1 supervision initiatives and regulatory activities across GTA branches.
  • Fulfill the duties of a CIRO-registered Business Location Supervisor for branches and registrants.
  • Lead a supervision team of 20+ Branch Supervision Officers, ensuring adherence to CIRO regulatory requirements and service standards.
  • Oversee daily and monthly supervision tasks, including trade supervision, advertising and sales literature reviews, outgoing correspondence, new account opening and maintenance, outside activities, and registration matters.
  • Support resolution of escalated supervisory issues and collaborate with Compliance on regulatory client complaints, internal investigations, and disciplinary actions.
  • Support CIRO Regulatory Case Assessment and Enforcement RFI responses.
  • Execute supervisory responsibilities for Nesbitt Burns Securities Ltd. (NBSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NBI registered with the U.S. SEC and member of FINRA.
  • Translate national initiatives into actionable plans for regional and branch-level execution.

Coaching and Advisory Support

  • Serve as a key relationship manager to the GTA Regional President, Market Leaders, and Assistant Market Leaders.
  • Act as a primary escalation point for GTA Investment Advisory Teams.
  • Promote risk awareness and a culture of compliance across the region.
  • Deliver training on regulatory requirements and process remediation to Investment Advisory Teams and branch staff.
  • Develop communications in support of the Supervision Program.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and support to the GTA Branch Supervision team.

Leadership

  • Attract, develop, and retain top talent.
  • Drive high performance through coaching, recognition, and effective performance management.
  • Lead or contribute to communication strategies that support behavioural change and compliance adoption.
  • Oversee the development of supervision contingency plans to ensure operational stability across the region.
  • Foster a culture aligned with BMO’s purpose, values, and strategy.
  • Build collaborative, interdependent teams across functions to maximize stakeholder value.
  • Act as a trusted advisor providing strategic input into business decisions.

Risk Management

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on applicable regulations, policies, and supervision practices.
  • Build and leverage industry networks to maintain awareness of best practices and regulatory trends.
  • Provide recommendations on regulatory requirements, risk mitigation, and supervisory enhancements.
  • Advise on business priorities, resource needs, and strategic execution roadmaps.
  • Monitor team performance and address issues proactively.
  • Analyze data to break down complex problems and provide actionable insights.
  • Ensure adherence to risk, supervision, privacy, and ethical standards, safeguarding client assets and the Bank’s reputation.
  • Apply expertise and sound judgment to resolve unique or ambiguous regulatory challenges.
  • Implement changes in response to regulatory trends and evolving business needs.

Qualifications:

  • Typically 7+ years of relevant experience, with a post-secondary degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Expert knowledge of supervision practices and CIRO regulations.
  • CIRO registrant in good standing and meets proficiency requirements to supervise IRs, RRs, Securities, and Options (Retail).
  • Completion of FINRA Series 7 and 63 exams; Series 24 completed or in progress is preferred.
  • Strong professional judgment supported by significant industry experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability and passion for developing others.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced analytical, problem‑solving, and influence skills.
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across groups.
  • Comfort navigating ambiguity.
  • Strong data‑driven decision‑making capabilities.

Salary:

$86,000.00 - $160,000.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
