The Head of Credit & Portfolio Management is the senior leader of the Portfolio Management (PM) function across Global Corporate Banking in Canada and the U.S. The role owns PM governance, standards and risk oversight. It serves as the senior PM approval authority within the delegated lending framework, leads active portfolio management and credit structuring excellence, and is the principal Corporate Banking representative to Risk, Compliance, Internal Audit and regulators on PM matters.

The role sets the standards and the operating model. Lending Unit PM leaders own business execution, staffing and portfolio outcomes. The role partners with Risk & Financial Management, Capital Markets and Global Transaction Banking, and applies effective challenge within BMO’s Risk Appetite framework.

Key Accountabilities

1. Governance & Standards

  • Act as the key governance driver for the PM function; own PM standards, policy interpretation and governance consistency across Corporate Banking.
  • Maintain a common PM operating playbook across LUs, standardizing intent and repeatable work rather than org models.
  • Provide Corporate Banking input to BMO corporate policies and lending directives, and ensure policies are interpreted and applied correctly.
  • Hold a standing seat on credit and risk committees as a delegate to the Co-Heads of Global Corporate Banking, with a documented escalation protocol.

2. Credit Governance & Approval Authority

  • Exercise delegated approval authority within delegated limits for transactions above LU PM head authority.
  • Serve as delegate for Business Head signoffs for the Co-Heads of Global Corporate Banking.
  • Provide effective challenge on material credit, underwriting and portfolio risk; escalate significant policy, governance or risk concerns.
  • Represent Corporate Banking on the U.S. Allowance Committee and contribute to the allowance and provisioning outlook.
  • Ensure risk-taking stays within the Risk Appetite framework, agreed limits and regulatory requirements.

3. Regulatory, Audit & Control Leadership

  • Act as the primary PM representative with Risk, Compliance, Internal Audit and regulators; lead on exams and reviews relating to Corporate Banking.
  • Lead PM-related remediation and regulatory change initiatives; act as direct counterpart to 2nd and 3rd line workstreams.
  • Ensure control effectiveness and audit readiness, including 1st line quality assurance of credit processes.

4. Portfolio Monitoring & Risk Insights

  • Act as chief architect of the KRI dashboard and wider monitoring controls; own a common Corporate Banking PM reporting framework covering KRIs, watchlist migration, EWIs and past dues.
  • Provide management insight on portfolio trends, concentrations and emerging risks, including sector and macro developments, working with sector heads and Industry Verticals.
  • Direct oversight of high-risk accounts: risk-rating accuracy, timely action on deteriorating credits, and Special Assets liaison with lessons-learned sessions.
  • Contribute stress testing and scenario analysis inputs for the Corporate Banking portfolio.
  • Own the PM data and reporting technology roadmap to establish a common fact base.

5. Active Portfolio Management & Capital Productivity

  • Maintain a Corporate Banking de-risking playbook with trigger frameworks for emerging risk and shifting concentrations.
  • Provide Corporate Banking input to the industry, single-name, tenor and product limit framework, and monitor the portfolio against it.
  • Partner with Capital Markets on hold levels, distribution, hedging and risk-transfer levers.
  • Maintain a long-term portfolio view that balances profitable growth with credit quality.

6. Credit Products & Structuring

  • Define the new-deal hand-off from origination to PM, clarifying deal understanding, owners and post-close items.
  • Support LUs that elect a greater PM role in new-business underwriting; origination retains client ownership and negotiation.
  • Provide structuring expertise and coaching on complex transactions; evaluate new and tailored financing structures and related policy changes.

7. Talent & Capability Development

  • Establish PM competency standards, training curriculum and career frameworks, coordinating with the Training working group.
  • Lead PM succession planning and talent development; set junior staffing principles that allow flexible deployment across LUs.

8. PM Effectiveness & Operating Model

  • Drive process simplification, automation and operating-model enhancements across PM workflows.
  • Oversee centralized mid-to-back-office support (LC, TPS, KYC), with PM retaining risk decisions and accountability.
  • Oversee PM KPIs and performance measurements across Corporate Banking, in coordination with the KPI task force.
  • Continue oversight and management of the BA team.

9. Leadership & Culture

  • Promote the Bank’s risk culture: clear accountabilities, open communication, effective challenge and tone from the top.
  • Lead and mentor a diverse team; develop leaders, plan succession and attract and retain top talent.
  • Foster an inclusive environment and a high-performance culture; role model One Bank leadership and the Bank’s Ambition.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent work experience; CPA or MBA or equivalent experience in finance, accounting and business law.
  • 20+ years in financial services in a corporate lending environment developing business; 10+ years negotiating and structuring financial transactions with expertise in Leveraged Finance.
  • Credit qualified, with expert knowledge of credit risk management and credit philosophy, policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of U.S. and/or Canadian regulatory expectations; experience leading regulator and Internal Audit engagements.
  • Command of portfolio management concepts: allowance and provisioning, RWA, return on capital, concentration and limit frameworks.
  • Expertise across key corporate lending sectors, with in-depth knowledge of corporate banking products and services.
  • Experience managing a large, diverse team and influencing LU leaders where decision rights are shared.
  • Highly developed written and oral communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Expert analytical thinking, change leadership, negotiation and risk management; in-depth strategic business planning.
