Role Summary

The Manager, Enterprise Risk Appetite (ERA), is an individual contributor role within Enterprise Risk Management. The position reports to the Director, Risk Appetite, in the Risk Appetite & Portfolio Management team under Enterprise Risk, and ultimately the Chief Risk Officer (CRO).

This position is an individual contributor role focused on supporting specific workstreams and major components of the Risk Appetite Program as listed in the “Key Responsibilities” section below.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities below reflect the overall activities performed within the Enterprise Risk Appetite Program. The individual in this role will not be expected to execute every activity; instead, they will support selected workstreams and activities based on team priorities, experience, and development goals.

Risk Appetite & Risk Metric Program Support

  • Contribute to the design of Risk Appetite requirements across setting, measurement, monitoring, breach management, action planning, and reporting.
  • Assist in documenting requirements in policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Assist in defining accountabilities and responsibilities across the three lines of defence.
  • Support integration of Risk Appetite with strategic planning, capital planning, and risk identification programs.
  • Assist in defining how Risk Appetite integrates across organizational levels.
  • Help distinguish metric types in documentation and tools.
  • Contribute to tool, template, and guidance development for consistent execution.
  • Provide stakeholder coordination across first, second, and third lines of defence.

Metric Identification, Design & Development Support

  • Support maintenance of a comprehensive set of risk metrics spanning key risk categories.
  • Assist with metric definition, calibration, and limit‑setting.
  • Work with SMEs to support metric development and documentation.

Oversight & Challenge Support

  • Support adherence monitoring for policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Assist in ensuring consistent program execution across risk types and business units.

Program Implementation & Execution Support

  • Assist with coordinating the annual refresh of qualitative statements and quantitative metrics.
  • Assist with communication of Risk Appetite to Business Group Heads and CROs.
  • Prepare assigned sections of quarterly reporting to Senior Management and governance committees.
  • Support development of documentation related to breaches and action plans.
  • Maintain components of the central repository of Risk Appetite materials.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience: Proven experience in Risk Appetite and or Metrics Program building, Metrics Identification and Development and risk management.
  • Expertise in Risk Management: Strong understanding of Risk Management and Risk Governance at large, complex financial institutions, including the Risk Management Lifecycle and key risks including credit, market, operational, regulatory/compliance, etc.
  • Quantitative Skills: Ability to work with and interpret large data sets; experience in quantitative analysis pertaining to credit risk, market risk, liquidity risk, and or non-financial risks; understanding of Data Management and Risk Data Aggregation and Risk Reporting requirements.
  • Communication and Relationship Management: Excellent skills to present complex findings and manage relationships to influence widespread change.
  • Independence: Ability to work independently and lead activities.
  • Intellectual curiosity: Natural drive and ability to become a subject matter expert on relevant topics.
  • Execution mindset: Ability to produce high-quality work products within defined timelines.
  • Critical thinking and ability to synthesize: Ability to analyze complex information deeply and derive meaningful insights.
  • Attention to detail: Ability to ensure exceptionally high-quality work products.

Qualifications

  • Typically 5-7 years of relevant experience and post‑secondary degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • In‑depth knowledge of business and regulatory environment.
  • In‑depth knowledge and experience with risk policy frameworks and testing frameworks (e.g., SOX 404, COBIT, COSO).
  • Deep technical knowledge gained through education and business experience.
  • Verbal & written communication skills - In‑depth.

Salary:

$69,000.00 - $129,000.00

The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
