Your Opportunity

BDO Canada LLP is looking for a Consultant, Risk Advisory Services to join BDO’s Risk Advisory team in Ottawa. The following provides an overview of the opportunity:

  • The Risk Advisory team endeavors to identify the most significant issues facing the world today with the objective of helping our clients understand what these risks are and how these risks could impact their business and/or operations.
  • As part of the team, you will be challenged to analyze new and emerging trends in the management, business, risk, legal, environmental, social, and governance landscapes, examine how our clients can mitigate the impact to their business, and help them determine how they can leverage these trends as new opportunities.
  • Some of the challenges our team has been tasked with in the past year include:
    • Assessing the risk of climate change impacting the availability of affordable housing.
    • Identifying international best practices in social innovation and finance and assessing the opportunity to leverage these opportunities to support the Canadian arts sector.
    • Identifying business and process risks, and developing strategies to mitigate these risks, for a multi-billion-dollar federal program responsible for supporting Indigenous nations and organizations across the country.
    • Reviewing a $500M major IT transformation initiative and assessing the risks to successful implementation of the project.
  • Our work takes the form of program evaluations, independent third party reviews, research projects, internal audits, enterprise risk management, and risk and controls assessments, to name a few.
  • Our team is looking for a candidate who wants a new challenge and has the desire to learn new skills, explore new opportunities, and apply their creativity to every project. You will be an active member of the team, playing a key role in multiple projects and working closely with both leadership and clients."

Your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Support client engagements primarily in the areas of internal audit, enterprise risk management, internal controls design and assessment, program evaluation, independent third party review, business process enhancement/ re-design, and IT general and application controls assessments.
  • Review, document, evaluate, and test business processes and internal controls for design and operational effectiveness in a wide range of environments and industries.
  • Develop client deliverables, including risk assessments, analyses, recommendations, and reporting documentation.
  • Collaborate with engagement teams to establish timelines and ensure high quality client service through daily progress of fieldwork and communication of updates to both Managers and fellow staff.
  • Support in driving innovation in service delivery, while ensuring delivery is in line with the firm’s quality and risk management requirements/expectations.
  • Assist Managers with business development proposals to existing and new clients.
  • Assist Managers in developing/refreshing methodologies related to existing and new solutions and services.
  • Maintain a proactive and logical approach to information gathering and present complex ideas through clear communication.
  • Demonstrate and apply strong project management skills, work collaboratively with team members, and use current technology and tools to enhance the effectiveness and quality of deliverables and services.
  • Solicit and apply feedback from Senior Consultants and Managers to enhance the quality and efficiency of future engagements.
  • Build positive working relationships with clients and identify improvements for future assignments.

Your experience and education

  • You have completed a relevant post-secondary program or degree/diploma.
  • You have completed or are interested in pursuing a professional designation (CPA, CIA, CISA, CE, etc.).
  • You have 0-2 years of professional experience in a risk advisory, consulting, internal audit, or evaluation setting.
  • You have a strong acumen for assessing relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, and impact.
  • You can diagnose project issues, build solutions, and draft impactful communications for clients.
  • You display strong problem solving and analytical skills, as well as writing and communication skills.
  • You have or qualify to obtain Government of Canada security clearance.
  • Bilingual in French and English is considered an asset.
