The Team
The Wildfire Origin and Cause team within the BC Wildfire Service operates under the Ministry of Forests as part of the province’s year-round wildfire management mandate. Reporting to the Superintendent, Wildfire Enforcement, the team supports investigative and enforcement functions under British Columbia’s Wildfire Act and Regulation. As part of a provincial organization structured across six Fire Centres, thirty-three Zones, and provincial coordination centres in Kamloops and Victoria, the team supports the full spectrum of wildfire management activities, including proactive risk reduction, operational readiness, active incident response, and post-incident recovery efforts. The unit works closely with Provincial Wildfire Origin and Cause Investigators, enforcement agencies, First Nations, local governments, fire departments, industry, and other partners to reduce human-caused wildfires through investigation, trend analysis, training, and interagency collaboration.
The Role
The Wildfire Origin and Cause Technician provides technical and investigative support to Provincial Wildfire Origin and Cause Investigators, with a primary focus on assisting investigations and authoring interim investigation reports. The role involves preparing detailed scientific and technical documentation, analyzing trends in human-caused wildfires to inform prevention strategies, and supporting enforcement partners with findings and program responses. The technician also participates in provincial projects and working groups, delivers training to internal and external partners, develops stakeholder relationships, and contributes to planning initiatives. In addition, the position may function within assigned Incident Command System roles during emergency response and models professional conduct that supports health, safety, and respectful workplace culture.
Qualifications
Education
• Undergraduate Degree or higher, or technical diploma in a field related to forestry, resource management or law and justice plus 2 years related experience*; OR
• Grade 12 or equivalent plus 4 years related experience*; OR
• An equivalent combination of education and/or training and related experience* may be considered.
*Related Experience
• Related experience is defined as wildfire operations or other disciplines related to natural resource management or emergency response management
Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
• Experience in a Wildfire Response setting
• Investigation experience related to the Wildfire Act and/or Regulations
• Training and/or certification associated with Wildfire investigation
• Experience preparing for and conducting investigations including writing reports and presenting evidence.
