The Team
Emergency Management and Climate Readiness (EMCR) is the lead coordinating agency in the provincial government for all emergency management activities. As such, EMCR’s mission is to be responsible to British Columbians for leading the management of provincial level emergencies and disasters and supporting other authorities within their areas of jurisdiction. EMCR works directly with local governments, First Nations, provincial ministries and agencies, federal departments, other jurisdictions, industry and volunteers in hazard mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
The Role
Working in the 24/7 Emergency Coordination Centre, the Operations Officer provides front line emergency response and coordination to all-hazard disasters and emergencies throughout the province, including flooding, wildland urban interface fires, earthquakes, wildlife calls, landslides, tsunamis, provincial Search and Rescue and dangerous goods incidents. They provide input into planning, development and implementation of emergency management systems and procedures; provide emergency management services; and act in a training and advisory capacity to staff in Emergency Operations Centres. Operations officers may be required to travel and be deployed to assist in EMCR facilities during emergency activations.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Secondary school graduation or equivalent (GED); AND
- Emergency management experience and/or training; AND
- Must possess and maintain a valid FULL BC driver’s license (minimum class 5), or an equivalent class driver's license from another province or jurisdiction. Please note that this will be verified at the end of the competition. *Learners “L” and Novice “N” license does not meet the job requirement.
Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:
- Post-secondary certificate, diploma or degree in emergency management.
- Experience in an emergency call centre or dispatch room environment.
- Experience and/or training in the Incident Command System or similar command and control environment.
- Experience dealing with natural hazards, risk assessment and/or emergency response field operations.
- Experience and/or training in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word and Excel.

About this Position:
These are temporary opportunities until January 31, 2027, with the possibility of extension.
These positions will be used “as and when needed” to support the operations of the EMCR 24/7 operations centre located in Saanichton, BC. As such, they could be scheduled in advance, or called on short notice, to work partial or full shifts that include early mornings, daytime, evenings and overnight periods. The work could also be on weekdays, weekends or holidays.
These positions have full time on-site requirements in Saanichton office.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future if and as when needed vacancies.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
