The Team:
The Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) is home to a committed team of professionals who care deeply about protecting BC’s farmland for future generations. This team of 15 Land Use Planners brings together expertise in land use planning, policy, and natural resource management to uphold the values set out in the Agricultural Land Commission Act. Collaboration, purpose-driven work, and a shared commitment to preserving agricultural land are at the heart of everything they do.
The Role:
This Land Use Planner (Developmental) role supports the Agricultural Land Commission’s mandate through thoughtful evaluation of land use applications related to the Agricultural Land Reserve. This involves providing expert advice, conducting research and analysis, working with landowners and local governments, and contributing to reports, and educational materials. The work blends agricultural and resource management planning with a strong focus on administrative law, policy, legislation, and land stewardship. The contributions made in this role help protect BC’s farmland for future generations and support the long-term sustainability of agriculture in the province.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements for both Planning Officer 21R and 24R:
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in resource management, geography, land use planning, environmental planning, agriculture, land systems, soil science, or a related field.
- Experience interpreting and analyzing legislation, regulation, bylaws, or policies.
- Experience writing reports and/or recommendations for external stakeholders, clients, decision makers, senior management, or executive.
- A valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.
Preference may be given to those with experience:
- Handling applications or authorizations related to land use planning or resource management in a local government, provincial government, or other related context; and/or,
- Working for an administrative tribunal.
Additional requirements for full working level (Planning Officer 24R):
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in the rural land use planning or natural resource management field; OR,
- Minimum of six (6) months of experience in agricultural land use planning.
Provisos for both Planning Officer 21R and 24R:
- May be required to travel overnight(s) to various locations in British Columbia.
- Conduct site visits which may include travel by vehicle, air or foot, and outdoor work in all weather conditions.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available at the ALC office in Burnaby.
Developmental Opportunity: the successful candidate will be appointed to the appropriate classification level based on their qualifications.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in Burnaby.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.
