The Team
The Kalamalka Forestry Centre’s Forestry Research and Seed Orchard team is an established group that has been supporting B.C.’s forests since the early 1980s. You’ll work alongside a diverse team of Scientists, Technicians, and Auxiliary Labourers who bring a wide range of skills and perspectives to ground‑level forestry research and seed production. This team is known for its passion and commitment to improving the health and resilience of B.C.’s forests, and they value people who contribute to an inclusive, respectful, and collaborative workplace.
The Role
As a Machine Operator, you’ll help maintain two important sites and the equipment that keeps them running, contributing to a clean and welcoming space for the public. This is a great opportunity to be part of meaningful forestry work while helping care for over 200 acres of land within the City of Vernon. Candidates will appreciate the chance to support environmentally focused work in an inclusive team where everyone’s skills and perspectives are valued.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Demonstrated experience operating agricultural tractors (up to 90hp) and equipment such as front-end loaders, skid steer loaders, small excavators.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and ability to maintain agricultural equipment, including servicing of gas and diesel engines.
- Valid class 5 driver’s license.
- Knowledge of hazardous materials information system (WHMIS) training or willingness to obtain these and other certifications.
Preference may be given to applicants:
- Who have a valid pesticide applicators certificate or willingness and ability to obtain.
- Irrigation systems, reel gun, and agricultural irrigation experience.
- Building maintenance, fabrication, and welding experience.
- Basic First aid training or higher
Willingness Statements:
- Willingness and ability to work:
- with pesticides/toxic chemicals;
- at heights using lifts and ladders;
- irregular hours for call-outs to address snow clearing emergencies; and
- to meet critical windows of opportunity regarding orchard treatments/applications.
