Job Summary

A great opportunity to take the next step in your career

Criminal Appeals and Special Prosecutions (CASP) has up to four permanent Crown Counsel Level 2/3 positions available on a designated major case involving encryption devices.

Crown Counsel assigned to a designated major case will be reassigned to other major cases at the conclusion of their assigned case or conclusion of their involvement in an assigned case.

A “major case” means one designated as such under the BC Prosecution Service’s Major Case Management (MCM) Model. MCM conducts the prosecutions of serious, complex, and lengthy cases that involve significant legal and security issues and require special knowledge and expertise. These cases may involve organized crime and/or gang-related matters.

Members of major case teams are required to have broad knowledge of both substantive and procedural aspects of criminal law, advanced research and computer skills, and well developed written and oral communication and advocacy abilities. They must also be able to work well as part of a larger team.

CASP is a division of the BC Prosecution Service (BCPS). The BCPS contributes to the protection of society by preparing for and conducting prosecutions diligently and fairly, and by striving to develop the most effective methods to administer justice in the Province. The BCPS prosecutes offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statutes in the Provincial, Supreme and Appeal Courts of British Columbia and in the Supreme Court of Canada. The BCPS provides legal advice to government and police on criminal law matters and develops policies and procedures on issues relating to the prosecution of criminal justice. The Assistant Deputy Attorney General is responsible for the administration of the BCPS, which is divided into the Office of the Assistant Deputy Attorney General, Criminal Appeals and Special Prosecutions, headed by a Director, and five regions which are each headed by a Regional Crown Counsel.

CASP’s management recognizes its responsibility to offer diversity in practice and is committed to facilitating the achievement of an enriched working environment. Upon their request, and at the discretion of the Executive Director, Major Cases, the successful candidate may be given opportunities to conduct cases, either as counsel or co-counsel, in all sections of the office. The operational requirements of their assigned major case as well as other major cases, will be factors when considering these requests. In these instances, efforts will be made to facilitate access of counsel to the full range of work available in the office. Assignment to individual cases is dependent on counsel’s level of skill and experience.

Job Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Laws Degree from an accredited common law school.
  • Membership in good standing in the Law Society of British Columbia or membership in good standing in another Canadian Law Society and immediately eligible to become a member of the Law Society of British Columbia.

  • Crown Counsel Level 2: Counsel in their 6th to 11th year of call, with a minimum of 5 years’ recent criminal trial experience as a called and practicing lawyer in Canada.
  • Crown Counsel Level 3: Counsel in their 12th year of call or greater, with a minimum of 5 years’ recent criminal trial experience as a called and practicing lawyer in Canada.
