Job Summary

The Team
The BC Prosecution Service operates in a fast-changing and high-pressure environment, shaped by evolving legal requirements and increasing volumes of digital evidence, which makes timely and effective disclosure more important than ever. The team is responsible for prosecuting criminal and regulatory offences and appeals across British Columbia, while also providing criminal law advice to police and government and supporting consistent policies and procedures. This work is grounded in fairness, accountability, and public confidence in the justice system, with a strong focus on serving diverse communities and ensuring equitable access to justice.

The Role
Legal Assistants provide essential support to Crown Counsel by helping prepare prosecution case files for court and completing a wide range of legal and administrative tasks under the supervision of Crown Counsel and the Office Manager. Working in a high-profile, fast-paced environment, this role relies on strong organization, clear communication, and respectful teamwork to ensure work is completed accurately and on time.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a recognized Legal Assistant certificate OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Administrative experience, including:
    • Office experience working in a confidential capacity.
    • Experience typing, drafting, formatting, proofreading and editing a variety of documents.
    • Experience developing and maintaining administrative systems, procedures and standards.

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • Successful completion of a Legal Assistant or Paralegal certificate or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year of administrative experience.
  • At least 1 year of recent experience (within the last 3 years) working as a Legal Assistant in a legal office.
  • Experience managing calendars, scheduling meetings and making travel arrangements.
  • Recent experience (within the last 3 years) working for the BC Prosecution Service.
  • Experience working in the criminal justice sector.
