Description
This is a unique opportunity to serve as British Columbia’s most senior representative in China. Based at the Embassy of Canada in Beijing, the Managing Director is accountable for the overall leadership and performance of British Columbia’s trade and investment platform in China, providing strategic leadership for B.C.’s trade promotion and investment attraction efforts, strengthening economic relationships, and advancing government priorities through client and stakeholder engagement, market intelligence, and high value initiatives.
The Managing Director leads a team delivering B.C.’s annual trade and investment program in China. The role is accountable for identifying and advancing opportunities that support B.C. businesses and attract investment to British Columbia, while maintaining strong relationships with key partners.
Trade and Invest BC, part of the Ministry of Jobs and Economic Growth, supports trade promotion, investment attraction, and export growth for British Columbia. Through a global network of Trade and Investment representatives, Trade and Invest BC is accountable for the optimization of export growth and investment attraction in British Columbia. This includes the development and delivery of policy, programs and services that support revenue generation, increasing family sustaining jobs and facilitating investment in B.C. based businesses.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

A bachelor’s degree or higher from a recognized university. Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.

A minimum of five (5) years’ experience, including at least three (3) years of recent experience, in each of the following areas:
-
International business development, trade promotion and/or foreign direct investment attraction.
-
Strategic planning and execution in complex international environments.
-
Leading, supervising and developing high-performing teams.
-
Developing and managing complex client and stakeholder, and partner relationships across government, industry and other organizations.
-
Project and initiative management, including delivery of multi-stakeholder or high-value initiatives and events.
-
Preparing and delivering strategic advice, briefings, and written materials for executive leadership, senior management and/or clients.

Proficiency in Mandarin (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
-
Demonstrated experience beyond the minimum years required for this position.

A master’s degree (MBA or equivalent) in business or economics related fields.
-
Experience working in a diplomatic mission, international organization or intergovernmental context.
Mandatory Requirements:
-
Ability to obtain and maintain a Canadian Diplomatic Passport and required diplomatic accreditation and visa in the host country (the successful candidate cannot hold citizenship of the host country).

Note: This requirement also applies to any family members who may accompany the successful candidate to the host country.

Canadian citizenship.
-
Ability to obtain and maintain Top Secret security clearance from the Government of Canada.

Ability to successfully complete a medical and fitness for duty assessment.

Proficiency in English and Mandarin (oral and written). Mandarin proficiency will be verified by a Government of British Columbia-approved evaluator.

Availability for occasional overtime outside normal working hours (e.g., evenings and weekends).

Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.

About this Position
This is a three (3) year term position with an anticipated start date in April 2027.
This position has full-time on-site work requirements in Beijing, China at the Embassy of Canada in Beijing.
One (1) Position available.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
This position is excluded from union membership.
