Grade 1 Teacher (Term Contract - 2.0 Positions)

The Athabasca Denesuline Education Authority (ADEA) is a First Nation Education Authority serving the three Denesuline First Nations communities in northern Saskatchewan; Black Lake First Nation, Hatchet Lake First Nation, and Fond Du Lac First Nation. The Authority serves a total student population of approximately 1,300+ students. The Authority is working toward improved educational outcomes by utilizing the latest technology, progressively piloting programs, and integrating Denesuline culture into the classroom and school curriculum.

The ADEA is seeking two competent, confident, motivated individuals to fill the two positions of Grade One Teacher on a term contract (with the potential of going on a full-time permanent contract) at Father Megret Elementary School (FMES), located in Hatchet Lake, Saskatchewan. In this role, you will provide strong interpersonal skills, commitment to learning and teaching in project-based ways and provide an enthusiastic learning environment for students. FMES is a Pre-K to Grade 5 facility with a student population of 200+, and a strong group of professional and paraprofessional staff.

This competition is open to all applicants who reside in Canada; and preference will be given to First Nation or other Indigenous applicants who possess the qualifications, knowledge, and skills to meet the minimum suitability requirements as stated for the position.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Be aware of any allergy’s children may have.

Establish clear instructional direction to support a positive learning climate in the context of the Denesuline culture and language.

Offer children the opportunity to interact with peers and learn social skills, learn school routines, and build a strong foundation for further success in school.

Required to plan and organize materials ahead of time so when the children arrive, the room and the Educators are ready to engage with children.

Provide positive ways for family engagement for learning success and provide a welcoming space that draws parents into the classroom.

Assess and document student learning daily.

Usage of provided device daily while students are not in the room for communications and the documentation of student observation process.

Cleaning protocols such as: all centre and tabletop materials that are reusable are to be cleaned following the covid protocols, and all dishes and utensils are to be washed and sanitized before leaving school for the day.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must be patient, flexible, observant, and passionate.

Must have communications skills such as: verbal and nonverbal, active listening, and empathy.

To follow the provincial Ministry of Education curricula and focuses on holistic child development including the social-emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual domains.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Education or equivalent.

Must be eligible for or posses a valid Saskatchewan Teaching Certificate.

Experience in teaching First Nations students at a remote community would be an asset.

First Aid Certification would be an asset (we pay provide training upon hire).

Related training or experience in the field of education would be a definite asset.

Must have strong understanding of the following programs and assessments: Play and Exploration: Early Learning Program Guide; Early Years Evaluation (EYE); Prekindergarten Essentials: Effective Practices, Policies and Guidelines; Saskatchewan Curriculum.

Actively engage with families, children, and community members to understand their backgrounds and experiences to support an equitable and inclusive school environment.

Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school-based staff, students, parents and community.
