Position Description

A temporary part time (0.5) Counselor is required by School District No. 60 (Peace River North) effective September 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025. The assignment will be at Bert Bowes Middle School.

Bert Bowes Middle School is a Gr. 7-9 school in the City of Fort St John. The school enrolls a population of 500 students. We enjoy itinerant access to a range of services such as a learning resource disability teacher, teacher for visually impaired, school psychologist, ESL specialist teacher and teacher for deaf/hard of hearing. Some themes that characterize our school are a commitment to student centered learning, and a focus on collaborative planning. Qualifications and Experience

Valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate (or eligible for)

Qualifications and demonstrated ability to teach the identified subjects at the middle years level

Experience with universal design and differentiation to meet the diverse needs of students

Excellent interpersonal, communications, collaboration and organization skills

Experience/training/knowledge of Social Emotional Learning. Demonstrated ability to create a positive classroom community contributing to a safe, caring, and healthy school where every student feels a sense of belonging

Strong belief in the philosophy of inclusion and the potential of all students to learn

Understanding of the BC Curriculum and ability to plan both short-term and long-term in consideration of class composition

Willingness to work in a collaborative model with staff on the foundation of enhancing student learning

Demonstrated use of classroom management practices that are pro-active and maintain student dignity

Demonstrated use of assessment practices that promote student learning and maintain student dignity

Advanced training in educational psychology and counselling (Master's Degree preferred)

Ability to develop and implement individualized education plans

for a diverse spectrum of student social, emotional and learning needs

for students with complex learning profiles.

Ability to use a wide variety of instructional strategies,

assessment practices and resources to support and accommodate individual

differences and to effectively manage a personalized learning schedule.

Ability to work in counselling capacity with students at the middle years level

Ability and knowledge with Middle School Philosophy and Practice

including teacher advisory group, Social/Emotional

Learning/(FRIENDS/TRIBES, Mind Up, Cognitive Coaching, Restorative

Justice, Circle Talks)

Knowledge of materials and strategies appropriate for supporting students with ADHD, FAS, and behaviour disorders

Knowledge/experience in working with critical incidence

responses, safety plans, crisis prevention, emergency plans, risk and

threat assessment

Strong desire to collaborate with colleagues to develop best practice

Individual counselling as well as group counselling experience (social skills, anger management, anxiety, self-regulation, etc)

Working knowledge of ethical procedures and guidelines

Ability to work with teachers, students and/or parents in a problem solving capacity

Ability/experience to contact and liaise with outside agencies

Knowledge/experience with student scheduling

Ability to coordinate transition initiatives for upcoming and outgoing students

Interest and willingness to coordinate student leadership programs

Interest and willingness to coordinate support groups for students

Ability/experience in behaviour support and intervention (Functional Analysis of Behaviour, Behaviour Intervention Planning

Working knowledge of response to intervention and pyramids of support

Compensation

$2,000 relocation allowance for teachers from BC, AB and Yukon and up to $4,000 for teachers from other areas

$2,947 recruitment allowance (paid over 10 months of the school year, based on the FTE)

Salary as per collective agreement. Current salary grid is $63,492 - $108,576

Benefits as per collective agreement with option to enroll in medical, dental, extended health, and group life insurance. Benefits are employer paid based on FTE
