The Parkland School Division currently has a Continuing Full-time/Term Designation (1.0 FTE) Teacher- Health & Wellness Facilitator position available at Centre for Education in Stony Plain, Alberta with our Student Supports and Services team. For existing PSD Continuing Teachers, it will be a 2 year term designation. For new Teachers to PSD, 2024-2025 will be a Probationary Contract and if successful in getting a Continuing, the position will extend into the 2025-2026 school year. Once the two year term designation is complete, the existing Teacher will go back to their home school, and the new Teacher will be placed into a teaching position at another school within the Division.

Function and Purpose of Position

Parkland School Division is committed to a Comprehensive School Health (CSH) approach that promotes health and well-being for students, staff, and families. The Health & Wellness Facilitator works as an integral part of the Student Supports and Services team to develop capacity and effectively implement procedures in matters related to wellness. In particular, the Health & Wellness Facilitator supports the division in the areas of universal and preventative health and wellness in relation to the 3 tenets of CSH: healthy eating, active living, and mental well-being.

Job Duties

Student Wellness

Works collaboratively with Student Supports and Services staff to coordinate the Division’s universal and preventative CSH-related programs and initiatives, with a focus on the tenets of healthy eating, active living, and mental well-being.

Responsible for supporting Principals and School Health Lead(s) in the development, implementation, and evaluation of school-based Comprehensive School Health (CSH) Action Plans in alignment with the Division’s CSH Handbook.

Creates systems and processes to track Division progress in attaining a culture of universal wellness utilizing quantifiable and data-driven information.

Facilitates regular collaborative learning opportunities for school-based School Health Lead(s) to drive the implementation of CSH Action Plans.

Supports the facilitation of approved large-scale Division CSH events/initiatives (e.g., Tri-Region Mental Health Week and the Try Me Triathlon.).

Healthy Eating

Promotes a well-balanced approach to eating within Division schools including components of a healthy diet as explained in Alberta’s Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Youth.

Organizes the procurement and distribution of nutritious foods to participating schools, through the Alberta Education Nutrition Allocation and through approved grants.

Applies for, monitors, and completes reporting requirements for approved grants, allocations, and donations related to food and nutrition (e.g., Breakfast Clubs of Canada). Ensures all funding sources and actions are aligned with PSD Student Supports and Services approved initiatives, and provides reports and data to meet grant management guidelines.

Provides and promotes healthy eating through seminars, workshops, courses, and special events in schools and cultivates a culture of continuous improvement.

Acts as a resource person to school personnel in the creation of environments that support healthy food choices and access to safe and nutritious foods.

Active Living

Provides and promotes active living and physical literacy through seminars, workshops, courses and special events in schools and cultivates a culture of continuous improvement.

Acts as a resource person to school personnel regarding active living and physical literacy.

Supports schools in their implementation of Daily Physical Activity (Kindergarten to Grade 9), active transportation, opportunities for outdoor activities, and access to before and after-school programs.

Applies for, monitors, and completes reporting requirements for approved grants and donations related to active living and physical literacy (e.g., Jumpstart Grants). Ensures all funding sources and actions are aligned with PSD Student Supports and Services approved initiatives, and provides reports and data to meet grant management guidelines.

Mental Well-Being

Supports preventative and universal school initiatives that support a positive culture and a sense of belonging and connectedness within the school community.

Applies, monitors, and completes reporting requirements for approved grants and donations related to mental well-being (e.g., Jumpstart Grants). Ensures all funding sources and actions are aligned with PSD Student Supports and Services approved initiatives, and provides reports and data to meet grant management guidelines.

Collaborates with the Divisional Psychologist and with other members of the Student Supports and Services team in the implementation of approved partnership initiatives (e.g. Equine therapy).

Ensures that all individualized student needs and inquiries are referred to the Divisional Psychologist or to the Division Principal of Wellness and Community Partnerships.

Ensures that all individualized family needs and inquiries are referred to the Family Support Facilitator or to the Division Principal of Wellness and Community Partnerships.

Staff Wellness

Collaborates with the Division Principal of Wellness and Community Partnerships and Human Resources in the development, implementation, and evaluation of Divisional Workplace Wellness initiatives.

Facilitates a division-level staff wellness committee, in collaboration with Human Resources.

Accesses and distributes resources regarding staff wellness, in collaboration with Human Resources.

Other Responsibilities

Sustains strong, effective relationships with various stakeholders, within the area of universal and preventative wellness supports and initiatives.

Consults with the Division Principal of Wellness and Community Partnerships on any potential external partnerships, in alignment with Division procedures.

Maintains accurate and timely records, and data regarding CSH initiatives.

Develops and revises division documents and resources in response to identified needs.

Provides regular updates to the Division Principal of Wellness and Community Partnerships on all areas of responsibility.

Performs other duties, as assigned by the Division Principal of Wellness and Community Partnerships.

Education and Experience:

a) Education:

i. Bachelor’s Degree in Education required.

ii. Master’s Degree in Education is an asset.

iii. Valid Alberta Teacher Certification is required.

iv. Leadership Quality Standard (LQS) Certification (achieved, in progress, or willing to complete in the required timeline).

b) Experience:

i) Extensive teaching experience in the areas of Health and Wellness, and Physical Education.

ii) Proven ability to plan, coordinate, implement, and modify a comprehensive student and staff wellness program, focused on building the resilience of children and youth.

iii) Experience in providing professional learning opportunities within the area of health and wellness.

iv) Experience collaborating with large teams and being accountable to stakeholders.

v) Experience in grant writing and reporting.

vi) Understanding of Tiered Response Models (e.g., Response to Intervention, Collaborative Response) is an asset.

vii) Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

viii) Ability to travel and work flexible hours.

ix) Project Management Experience is an asset.

Work is performed under the direction of the Division Principal - Wellness and Community Partnerships.

Consults with the Division Principal - Wellness and Community Partnerships regarding partnerships, initiatives, funding, and communication decisions.

Physical Demands

Some sitting, standing, moving, lifting and bending (or a combination of these movements) and intense concentration with frequent interruptions.

Potential Risks of the work environment are:

Dealing with uncooperative or difficult students

Working Conditions

Work is located in schools and at division office

Works on a 10 month calendar.

This position requires local travel, including the use of a personal vehicle and valid Alberta Driver’s License; mileage will be reimbursed.
