What the day will look like

 

As the Underwriting Team Lead, you’ll cultivate an inspiring team environment built on open communication and collaboration. You’ll oversee daily underwriting operations, coach and motivate team members, and ensure our standards for excellence are met. Your expertise will directly influence our portfolio as you assess risks, negotiate terms, and drive new business—all while maintaining rigorous underwriting integrity.

 

Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Creating an inspiring team environment with open communication culture
  • Overseeing day-to-day underwriting operations
  • Monitoring team performance and reporting on key metrics
  • Motivating team members and identifying training needs; providing coaching and development
  • Underwriting new business, renewals, and endorsements within authority limits, and referring complex files as needed
  • Enhancing and maintaining underwriting methods and techniques
  • Making independent decisions on risk selection and acceptance
  • Negotiating and binding terms, conditions, and premiums for assigned accounts
  • Generating new business opportunities and retaining existing accounts in line with company strategy
  • Maintaining bordereaux and logs as required by binding authorities
  • Providing forecasting for new and renewal business under designated binding authorities
  • Participating in self-development activities to expand underwriting and business knowledge
  • Assisting in training and development of staff in underwriting functions
  • Reviewing and assessing claims
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

This role provides the opportunity for hands-on commercial underwriting in the exciting niche of sports, leisure and entertainment.   Our experienced and dedicated team of 12 are in constant communication even when working remotely, and support one other in achieving our shared goals.  K&K insures the world’s fun, and it is a dynamic and ever-changing field of insurance specialization.  This role rewards creative problem solving and thinking outside of the box to provide the best solutions for Insureds with complex risks, while staying within our authority at all times.  We have strong relationships with major global carriers such as Aviva, Liberty and Lloyds.  With the resources of a large corporation such as Aon, yet the flexibility of a small group, employees have the chance to learn different skill sets in quoting, binding and issuing a variety of insurance products that support the entertainment industry, with brokers across the country.  They will report directly to the Underwriting Director and have a chance to expand their knowledge and expertise both internally and through onsite inspections of risks, industry events, and educational courses.  

 

Required Experience

 

  • College diploma or university degree
  • CIP designation preferred
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in Commercial Property/Casualty underwriting
  • At least 3 years in a team lead, supervisor, or management role preferred
  • Experience with an MGA or managing a small agency is an asset
  • Sound knowledge of policy wordings
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, decision-making, and negotiating skills
  • Independent thinker and self-starter
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Committed team player
  • English/French bilingualism is an asset
