The Unit Manager will provide daily direct inspired leadership and clinical oversight to the University of Alberta Hospital Mental Health & Addiction Services inpatient units 4F3/4G2 and Neuromodulation. The Unit Manager will also be responsible for overseeing the UAH Adult Acute Services casual and regularized relief staff. The scope of this role could change in the future as Recovery Alberta continues to reorganize, and the portfolio may change to align with organizational needs. This position has transitioned to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. The Unit Manager (UM) provides frontline leadership and is accountable for meeting the day-to-day clinical and operational requirements of the assigned program(s) and will provide coaching and assistance in the delivery of competency-based education related to Recovery Alberta’s recovery-oriented care and the delivery of three streams of service: mental health, addictions and concurrent disorders. This position reports directly to the Program Manager. In this role, the Manager ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality care by leading and supporting a skilled and engaged workforce. Responsibilities include staff recruitment and development, oversight of daily unit operations, and effective management of financial, clinical, and practical resources. The Unit Manager plays a key role in coordinating patient care, fostering team collaboration, and addressing the complex needs of an acute care environment. Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, allocate resources, and use data-driven decision-making to address operational challenges (such as high overtime or constant care usage). Applying the best evidence informed practice and using a continuous quality improvement approach, the UM will ensure that services delivered by the team(s) meet the needs of service users and stakeholders. The Manager will have an active relationship with physicians, service users and other invested parties in order to continually gauge the perception of the quality of services provided and in order to facilitate seamless and continuous care.

Degree or diploma in a health-related field. Registration with professional association/college as appropriate. Minimum of 5 years of front-line experience with demonstrated informal leadership competencies (e.g. participation on committees/projects, leading peers, consulting to management, conducting education, sitting on external boards, involvement with professional association etc.).

As required.

Candidates with a nursing background. Knowledge and experience within Mental Health & Addiction Services is an asset. Experience in crisis intervention, and workplace violence prevention in high-acuity mental health or addiction setting. Experience in managing collective agreements, overtime, attendance, grievances, and staff wellness/retention strategies. Certification in change management or project management is an asset.
