The Unit Clerk in the Orthopedic Surgery Centre Surgical Suite is an integral member of a multidisciplinary team supporting a fast paced, four theatre Operating Room that provides Orthopedics, Arthroplasty, Urology, Bariatric, and General Surgery services. This role is often the first point of contact for the OR, requiring strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Responsibilities include a wide variety of administrative tasks such as reception duties, greeting and directing patients, families, and health professionals, and maintaining accurate patient records and charts. Additional duties may include conducting hand hygiene audits, assisting with scheduling, restocking and ordering supplies, dispersing equipment, and updating signage. Effective written and verbal communication skills, along with a commitment to Patient- and Family-Centered Care and collaborative team practice, are essential. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to adapt quickly to changing workloads, manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and show initiative, accountability, and sound problem solving skills. A commitment to professional development and contributing to a positive work environment is valued. Given the high acuity of patients and the fast paced nature of the environment, strong critical thinking, multitasking, and organizational abilities are required. Accurate and neat record keeping is essential. As Unit Clerks have access to sensitive health information, a strong understanding of confidentiality requirements is mandatory.

As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.

Unit Clerk certificate and Medical Terminology from a recognized post-secondary institution. Computer knowledge of Microsoft Office, Connect Care, Netcare, WFM required. Detail to accuracy and timelines is required. Demonstrated reliability and dependability. Demonstrated excellence with interpersonal communications skills, including telephone skills is required. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions is required. Unit Clerk experience in a high acuity setting is preferred. Relevant experience will also be considered. Timekeeping/payroll experience with AHS scheduling software (WFM). Attention to detail will be crucial as you ensure that employees are scheduled appropriately, and employee pay data is captured in accordance with AHS policies, procedures, and collective agreement provisions.
