Unit Clerk - Hemodialysis

The Unit Clerk provides clerical support to staff and physicians on the nursing unit. This includes handling or referring incoming phone calls, greeting, and directing visitors and patients and ensuring that the whereabouts of staff is always known. The Unit Clerk manages the information flow between Physicians, Nurses, and the multidisciplinary team. This includes relaying information related to admissions, transfers and discharge of patients, diagnostic tests, medical treatments, medications, and pre- and post-operative treatments as requested. This position also transcribes and processes Doctor's orders including medication orders, laboratory orders, diagnostic imaging orders, other diagnostic studies, and treatment orders. The Unit Clerk manages patient records and charts and may prepare and submit health care billings on behalf of Physicians for a variety of procedures, treatments, and services. The Unit Clerk will ensure an adequate level of supplies and equipment are available on the unit and submit work orders as required. The Unit Clerk will admit the patients using Connect Care and update the Connect Care records as required. The Unit Clerk will assist the Unit Manager with checking of payroll. Some staff and patient scheduling are also required. The Unit Clerk may also assist with staff and patient screening, and other related duties under the direction of the Unit Manager and or delegate. The Unit Clerk will complete unit audits as directed. Casual Employment: As a casual employee (on a call-in basis), you will not have a regular schedule and there will be no minimum hours guaranteed for any week or month. This position is based in the Norwood Hemodialysis unit.

As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.

Unit Clerk experience in a hospital setting. Medical terminology. Must be computer literate when using Microsoft Office. Experience with Connect Care. Demonstrate exceptional communication and organization skills. Must be able to read, write and speak English fluently. Relevant experience will be considered.

Unit Clerk experience in a hemodialysis setting. Experience with checking payroll. Experience in a fast-paced environment with numerous interruptions. Intermediate computer skills. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support- Healthcare Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification.
