This is an exciting opportunity to work as an Undergraduate Nursing Employee on a busy Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The Stollery Philip C. Etches Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) located at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, is a 69 funded bed unit that accepts babies from all over Northern Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, and is characterized by high acuity and high activity. The NICU will provide an opportunity to develop a broad knowledge base and a solid Nursing foundation. The UNE is an unregulated member of the inter-professional health care team who provides Patient Centered Care in the Level 2 Nursery with the supervision of an RN. The nursing activity performed, and the level of supervision required is determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by professional associations, AHS and the competency of the UNE. The UNE will be accountable for providing safe patient care in accordance with her/his educational preparation and competency. The UNE is responsible for seeking consultation and guidance. The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position provides an opportunity for the nursing student employed as a UNE to consolidate the knowledge and skill acquired in their approved nursing education program towards competency in the range and complexity of Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) practice. The UNE is an unregulated member of the collaborative health care team who provides patient centred care with the supervision of the RN or RPN. The nursing activities performed, and level of supervision required are determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by regulatory colleges, Alberta Health Services (AHS) policy, educational preparation, practice setting, complexity of the patient, level of risk involved, and competency of the UNE.

Current enrolment in an approved Alberta nursing education program leading to initial entry to practice as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse. Current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) certificate. Successful completion of 3rd year of an RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or currently in the final year of an after-degree RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or successful completion of 2nd year of an RPN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RPN education program.

Current and active enrollment in an accredited nursing education program leading to initial entry to practice as a Registered Nurse. Completed a minimum of 450 hours of clinical practice in an accredited nursing education program. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Strong communication skills essential. Demonstrated ability to work with a large multi-disciplinary team. Excellent organizational skills required. Previous NICU clinical experience an asset.
