Description
The Community Accessible Rehabilitation (CAR) program is an ambulatory rehabilitation program for adult clients with complex and/or chronic neurological and/or musculoskeletal injuries. This is your opportunity to join this dynamic team to use and develop your knowledge and skills as a Therapy Assistant (TA). As a CAR TA, you’ll be working with a diverse range of rehab clients in an out-patient setting. You’ll work with PTs and OTs on our MSK team, where the focus is clients with complex hand injuries/surgeries and clients with lower extremity amputations. As well you will work with our Neuro team (OT, PT, SLP, RecT) with clients who have complex diagnoses, which may include stroke, brain injury, Parkinson’s, or spinal cord injury. As a TA within the CAR program, you will help to provide group and individual treatment sessions under the supervision of licensed PTs, OTs, Recreation Therapists and/or SLPs. The TA also supports the rehab team by ordering supplies, preparing for treatment groups, organizing the department, and preparing therapy items. The successful candidate for this position will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills. They will have demonstrated ability to function effectively within a patient-centered, interdisciplinary team of health care professionals. They will be able to work independently and within a team, demonstrating flexibility and teamwork. Able to adapt to a changing health care environment and be self-motivated to expand skills and knowledge. CAR is a multisite program, and this position currently supports our team at the Sheldon M Chumir Health Centre. The caseload for all positions within CAR may be subject to change based on operational considerations. This position, along with the CAR program, transferred to Assisted Living Alberta on January 15, 2026.
As a Therapy Assistant, you will work both individually and as part of an interprofessional team under the assignment, monitoring and evaluation of an audiologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, recreation therapist or speech-language pathologist. You will contribute to effective and efficient rehabilitation services including direct and indirect client care across the health care continuum (healthy living, getting better, living with illness and disability, end of life care) for all ages as well as non-client service provision. This role will require you to work effectively with internal and external partners, and display professionalism and strong ethics in both client centered care and participation in care teams. You will demonstrate evidence of reflective thinking and lifelong learning that enhances individual and team competency. You will have opportunities to use your interpersonal and clinical skills in contributing to quality improvement, program planning and student supervision.
Completion of diploma from an accredited post-secondary rehabilitation Therapy Assistant program or equivalent training may be considered.
Diploma from a Canadian recognized Physical, Occupational, or Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant program. At least 1 year experience working as a Therapy Assistant (full-time equivalent). Basic sewing skills. Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing workload demands. Current BLS certification required. Strong written and verbal English language skills.
At least 1 year experience working with adults with neurological and/or complex musculoskeletal injuries. At least 1 year experience working in a collaborative manner within a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team. Experience with wound care. Basic knowledge of splint care and finishing. Basic knowledge in the use of therapeutic modalities. Experience with ordering supplies (i.e. iProcurement).
