The Social Worker II in the Rockyview General Hospital (RGH) Emergency Department provides essential psychosocial care within a high‑volume acute care environment. This role supports patients and families presenting with complex social, emotional, safety, and system‑related needs that impact emergency care, patient flow, and safe discharge. The Social Worker II delivers rapid psychosocial assessment, crisis intervention, brief therapeutic support, and discharge planning for patients across the lifespan. Social work intervention in the ED is critical to addressing social drivers of emergency department use and supporting timely, appropriate transitions to community, home care, or continuing care services. Working collaboratively with physicians, nursing, allied health, EMS, and community partners, the Social Worker II helps mitigate psychosocial risk, inform clinical decision‑making, and reduce barriers to discharge. Particular attention is given to patients experiencing housing instability, mental health or substance use crises, caregiver stress, family conflict, cognitive impairment, or personal safety concerns. This position is well suited to a flexible and resilient social worker who thrives in unpredictable, time‑sensitive environments, exercises strong professional judgment, and contributes effectively to interprofessional emergency care teams.

As a Social Worker II, you will be a member of an inter-disciplinary team and provides a range of social work services to patients and their families. Your services may include: psychosocial assessment, resource-based interventions, individual, group and family treatment, risk screening, counselling, case management and coordination, transition or discharge planning, and prevention, promotion and public awareness activities.

Completion of bachelor's degree in Social Work. Active or eligible for registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW).

Minimum two (2) years of post‑degree social work experience, preferably in acute care, emergency, or complex community‑based settings. Demonstrated ability to complete rapid psychosocial assessments and provide effective crisis intervention in high‑stress situations. Experience providing brief, goal‑directed interventions and addressing psychosocial barriers to care and discharge. Strong working knowledge of Alberta community resources, crisis services, housing supports, Home Care, and continuing care pathways. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within interdisciplinary Emergency Department teams. Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to complete concise, timely clinical documentation. Proficiency with electronic health records and clinical information systems (Connect Care/EPIC preferred). Ability to work independently within Social Worker II scope and established professional standards.

Experience working in an Emergency Department. Experience supporting individuals experiencing mental health crises, substance use, housing instability, or family violence. Experience supporting older adults or individuals with cognitive impairment in acute care settings. Knowledge of trauma‑informed and culturally responsive practice.
