Description
The Respiratory Therapist (RT) Educator is an integral member of the anesthesia care team and plays a key role in ensuring high‑quality perioperative respiratory care. The Educator enhances and supports staff development, orientation, clinical education, and competency evaluation across the Level 3 Surgical Suites of the Walter C. Mackenzie Centre, as well as perioperative areas within the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, Stollery Children’s Hospital, and additional anesthesia locations such as Endoscopy, Radiology, and Diagnostic Imaging. This role supports excellence in patient care by providing clinical expertise, mentorship, and leadership in perioperative respiratory therapy practice. Clinical Education & Staff Development: Support and enhance staff development, clinical education, and ongoing evaluation of practice within the perioperative environment. Lead orientation for new staff in the surgical suites, including Connect Care training and specialized clinical competencies. Provide one‑to‑one clinical support for learners and staff in perioperative settings. Develop and maintain educational policies, procedures, and learning tools focused on student orientation, staff development, and clinical competencies. Facilitate CPR/ACE module training and support N95 fit testing. Leadership & Collaboration: Work collaboratively with Unit Managers, Patient Care Managers, and anesthesia physicians as part of the interprofessional surgical services team. Serve as a role model and leader aligned with AHS mission, philosophy, and values. Support department needs through assessing competencies, identifying learning gaps, and implementing educational strategies. Participate in direct patient care, when required, to support clinical needs or learners.
As a Respiratory Therapist III - Clinical Practice Lead, you will be responsible for mentoring, promoting standards of practice, responding to clinical questions, and coordinating ongoing skill and student development within your team. You will collaborate with managers and supervisors in the provision and access to internal and external continuing education and professional development programs including certifications and upgrades.
Active or eligible for registration with the College and Association of Respiratory Therapists of Alberta (CARTA).
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. 5 years recent experience in the RTII (Anesthesia) role required. Previous pediatric and/or intensive care experience required. Demonstrated mentorship, teaching experience, and the ability to develop learning plans and orientation tools. Proven organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Ability to assess, support, and educate staff on departmental competencies and technologies (e.g. arterial Line placement). Strong problem‑solving, decision‑making, conflict resolution, and change‑management skills. Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure with minimal supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times. Additional Responsibilities (Optional Scope Based on Operational Needs): Because the RT Educator often overlaps with RT III functions, the role may include: Providing technical and clinical expertise related to anesthesia and physiological monitoring equipment. Coordinating RT team assignments, supporting safe and effective anesthesia services, and onboarding new RT team members.
Post‑RRT education in Anesthesia Assistance preferred.
