Description
The Cell Imaging Facility Research Technician, under the supervision of the Cell Imaging Facility Manager, will provide technical support for both research and teaching in the Cell Imaging Facility. Duties will include assisting with or carrying out preparation of biological samples for the facility, operation of the instruments in the facility and acquisition of data. The individual will also perform general laboratory duties to ensure the smooth running of the Cell Imaging Facility.
RESEARCH/TEACHING DUTIES (80%): Perform routine maintenance, operation of imaging and preparative equipment. Coordinate service and repair of instruments. Perform tissue processing of biological samples for different imaging modalities. Troubleshoot user problems arising during instrument operation. Assist and/or train new users in usage of equipment, related accessories. Assist users with design of facility-related imaging experiments. Assist in image processing, analysis to generate data, interpretation of imaging/flow data. Provide staff relief in absence of other facility staff members. Monitor computers for routine maintenance including back-up and restoration of systems. Perform data back-up and maintenance of booking system. Install computer software. Learn evolving image processing and analysis software tools. Assist with computer upgrades. Develop software scripts for image acquisition and analysis. Participate, in collaboration with other cell imaging personnel, in the development/presentation of lectures, practical sessions and workshops. Facilitate training and information seminars with microscopy technical representatives. Conduct tours of and promote facility. GENERAL LABORATORY DUTIES (10%): Perform general maintenance (care and cleaning) of lab instruments, order supplies, clean preparation areas, reagent inventory. Adhere to safety and emergency procedures including proper waste disposal. Ensure compliance with biohazard/biosafety rules. Maintain inventory of instruments, software licenses. Document procedures. Maintain the lab area in clean, operational order. ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES (10%): Maintain instrument logs. Coordinate user bookings and technical services. Administer online booking and logging system. Create new/delete expired accounts, generate monthly user reports, assist with preparation of billing files, generate statistical usage data.
Minimum of a Master of Science degree. The candidate must possess some microscopy experience. Proficiency with Windows OS, MS office and computer hardware. Individual must have basic laboratory skills including cell culture, preparation of solutions, and reagents, performing immuno-fluorescence staining. Must be comfortable with various platforms of computers and have trouble-shooting skills. Assistance with developing new imaging methods. Experience in cancer/cell biology.
As Required.
PhD degree preferred. Working knowledge of a programming language is a plus.
