Make a difference in the lives of children and families by joining the team at Alberta Children’s Hospital Unit 4. Unit 4 is a 27 bed unit accepting patients from birth to 18 years of age. Patient populations on Unit 4 can include general pediatric medicine, general surgery, trauma, brain injury, orthopedics, plastic surgery, endocrinology, metabolics, eating disorders, mental health and overflow oncology. As a Registered Nurse (RN) on Unit 4, you will assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for the above patient population. Opportunities for professional growth include participation on unit based education/safety committees, motivation committees, participation in ACH initiatives, senior skill certification and charge nurse certification. As the RN, you will provide ongoing assessment, care, education, and coordination of services to children, youth and families admitted to Unit 4. This includes assessment of physical, psychological, and social needs & planning appropriate interventions. The RN participates in a multidisciplinary team and works both in an independent and collaborative manner. You will practice in a way that supports family centered care. It is an expectation that the RN will be a collaborative partner in providing teaching to patients, families, students and other multi-disciplinary stakeholders. Develop your pediatric skills while working in a supportive learning environment. Unit 4 provides a variety of opportunities for growth and learning in a fun pediatric environment. As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $35.87/hour - $43.82/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable. Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)

Completion of SCC’s certifications. Completion of TNCC, PEARS, PALS, ENPC or other applicable pediatric focused courses. 1 year + experience (within the last 5 years) in a pediatric acute care setting. Minimum of 6 months of current experience on Unit 4. Participation in unit/hospital based initiatives and committees. Care experience with infants, children and adolescents. Experience in pediatric surgery, trauma, orthopedics, diabetes, mental health, general surgery. Previous experience with Unit 4 specific Charge training and senior skill designation.

Ability to work under time constraints, within a fast-paced changing environment. Exceptional interpersonal communication skills with the ability to adapt communication styles to meet the needs of specific children and families. Excellent written and verbal communication. Demonstrated initiative, accountability, time management, problem solving ability and organizational skills. Strong decision making and assessment skills. Must convey and demonstrate AHS’ five core values.
