Registered Nurse - Neurosciences

This exciting position is within the Epilepsy Clinic for the Neurosciences portfolio. Experienced in caring for patients who have Epilepsy you will also have an experience in mental health, in particular crisis assessment and support and preferably counselling. This specialized area of neurological nursing requires excellent self-directed, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The Registered Nurse (RN) will work as a collaborative member of the interdisciplinary team and requires strong leadership skills to uphold the principles and standards of the patient and family-centred care delivery model. The RN will coordinate with a Neuropsychologist, group therapy sessions focused on new diagnoses of Epilepsy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapies. The RN will offer ongoing support and education to patients and their families. The RN acts as a liaison between patients, physicians and community resources as required. The RN must possess excellent telephone triage and listening skills as a large portion of nursing are via telephone. The RN will be provided with additional appropriate training to enhance their current Neurological knowledge to be successful. The RN is part of a team and will be cross-trained in the program to support other RNs.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification.

A minimum of 2 years regularly working as an RN in Neurosciences either in-patient or ambulatory, with at least 5 years. Minimum of one-year regular Epilepsy experience in a health care setting desired within the past 2 years. Minimum of 6 months of crisis assessment, management and support. Strong communication skills utilizing a variety of modalities (i.e., verbal, written, active listening) and ability to adapt communication style to meet the needs of specific patient, relay patient information to primary health care provider(s) on and off-site, in a timely, concise, accurate manner, in order to facilitate the primary health care provider's treatment decisions. Must have the ability to push, pull, and lift equipment of up to 20 lbs. Must be able to participate in patient assessments, moving and handling, transferring patients, walking and standing. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods. Knowledge and ability to use computer applications such as Microsoft Office, Excel, and Outlook is required and be competent Connect Care.

BLS Certified. Experience of Case Management an asset. Knowledge of mood disorders, Working with mental health patients and care teams. Preference will be given to candidates who have this skill set. Experience of contributing to the quality improvement process by working with others to identify and implement areas for improvement and improved service delivery and patient outcomes.
