The Recreation Therapist II provides direction to the recreation program, and works under the general supervision of the Manager, aiming to enrich the lives of the residents in Supportive Living by providing the support and assistance implementing therapeutic recreation activities. The incumbent works directly with clients in the development, preparation, implementation, supervision and assessment of recreational activities and programs. The position involves provision of patient care, possible general supervision of professional and support staff, orientation of new staff and students to the service, participation in performance appraisals, participation in program evaluation and position involves participation on various committees setting clinical direction for patients care and operations. Performs interventions in accordance with established standards and procedures of the Recreation Therapy Department. Drives the Handibus when required for community outings. Note: Nanton is located approximately 90km south of Calgary and the schedule is subject to change based on programming.

As a Recreation Therapist II, you will take a leadership role in ensuring that the level of therapeutic recreation practice in your clinical area is evidence based, patient-and family-centred and in accordance with policies, procedures and standards of practice. You will provide clinical leadership to ensure safe and efficient care as well as coordinate the assessment, treatment, education and care of the patient (client, resident). You will participate in program development to ensure effective delivery of services, including the development of protocols, forms, education, and quality improvement initiatives. You will complete assessment, treatment, education and management of clients¿ treatment progress and provide clinical support and consultation. You will collaborate and communicate with the health care team and participate in patient rounds, family conferences and meetings as related to the client and family.

Completion of bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation and Leisure Studies. Active or eligible registration for Professional Membership with Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA). Minimum three years' related clinical experience as a Recreation Therapist.

Experience working with seniors and the cognitively impaired patients is required. CPR, First Aid, Anaphylaxis required. Demonstrated leadership, organization, education and group facilitation skills. Excellent communication, accountability and time management skills required. Experience with coordinating recreation activities and directing the recreational therapy aide. Assists residents in getting ready for community outings when off site. Assists residents with toileting and personal care as required when off site. Works collaboratively with other staff, residents, families, and volunteers. Resume must accompany application in order to be considered for position. Able to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment. Knowledge and experience in accessing community- based resources. Must demonstrate flexibility to practice within a continually changing health-care environment. Class 5 operators license required, must have or able to obtain a Class 4 driver’s license. Food safe certification. Ability to utilize safe transferring and lifting equipment (It’s Your Move) is necessary. Ability to handle the physical demands of the position.

Minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a Recreation Therapist II in a rural Long Term Care or supportive living facility preferred. Experience providing supervision to Recreation Therapy Aides preferred. Supportive Pathways is an asset.
