Description
Longer term rehabilitation for those patients with complex mental health needs and mild to moderate intellectual disability is the target population for Unit 8-1B. Unit 8-1B’s multidisciplinary team will work collaboratively with patients, guardians, family and other stakeholders to support growth and foster development alongside patients and their recovery orientated goals. Patients on 8-1B require longer hospitalization due to the complexity of their mental health needs and often have co-occurring complex behavioral and additional challenges. Patients often have minimal community living options due to significant past historical challenges and unit staff are tasked with building resiliency and working towards skill building to help patient prepare for community living opportunities that will meet their complex needs. Predominately patients access Unit 8-1B through Edmonton Zone Addictions and Mental Health Adult inpatient units once their acute illness is stabilized and an appropriate community placement cannot be established. Patients may have voluntary or involuntary status under the Mental Health Act. Reporting to the unit manager, the Psychiatric Aide is responsible for meeting the personal care needs and comforts of the patients. This involves adhering to facility policies/procedures while supporting the patient’s clinical care plan. Duties will include assisting with the provision of routine nursing care to meet patient’s hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation, and safety needs. They should be prepared to assist with organized activities/programs and observing patients’ mood, health, and well- being. You will play a critical role in maintaining the safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors while effectively communicating with patients and other health professionals.
As a Psychiatric Aide, you will work as a collaborative member of the multi-disciplinary team to meet the personal care needs and comforts of patients in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. You will assist nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs as well as assist with organized activities or programs. In this position, you will observe and report on a patient¿s mood, health, well-being, maintain effective communication with patients and health professionals, assist with the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors as well as assist in the general support of the work area.
Completion of Grade 12. A combination of education and experience satisfactory to the employer will also be considered.

Non-violent crisis intervention training. Sound observation and strong verbal communication skills. Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Ability to adapt quickly to changes in daily schedule and patient acuity changes. Working knowledge of patient and family centered principles.
Health Care Aide certificate and Mental Health First Aid certificate Vitals Training Working knowledge of the CoACT model of care.
