Physician Assistants (PA) are academically prepared and are highly skilled health care professionals who provide a broad range of medical services. As important members of the collaborative care team, Alberta Health Services (AHS) provides alternative job opportunities for PAs to act as health care extenders, working under the supervision and direction of a physician to complement existing services and aid in improving patient care. Physician Assistants are fully regulated health professionals in Alberta and must be registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). In this position the PA will deliver acute care to patients at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary within a multidisciplinary team in General Internal Medicine. The Department of Medicine’s Division of General Internal Medicine provides comprehensive clinical care for patients with complex medical conditions in a variety of settings. We are clinicians, researchers, educators, and administrators focused on improving health and care delivery along the many spectrums of adult chronic disease. Calgary is a rapidly growing cosmopolitan city with a population of over 1.4 million people and an excellent school system. Besides the rich academic environment, Calgary offers a wide array of sporting facilities and easy access to recreational parks including Banff National Park and Kananaskis Country. The Rocky Mountains with their serene beauty, provide ample opportunities to pursue winter and summer sports and leisure activities.

You will be working alongside physicians, nurses, pharmacists and dieticians. Job duties often include taking and documenting the history and physical examination and carrying out a treatment plan under the direction of the attending/supervising physician. Duties will also include interfacing with nursing and allied health providers, providing education to patients and families, participating in safe transitions for patients being admitted and discharged, preparing patients for procedures, and care coordination. Appropriate supervision and support are provided, and a formal orientation and assessment period will be implemented. Only those demonstrating the strongest qualifications will be contacted for an interview.

This posting is only open to Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada. Candidates must submit a Curriculum Vitae and evidence of PA training at a recognized Canadian institution. The applicant should have or be eligible for CPSA registration. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The successful applicant will be responsible for registering and maintaining professional licensure with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada (e.g. Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and individuals with open work permits). As well, applicants must be able to satisfy the CPSA's criteria for registration as a Physician Assistant.

It is anticipated this will be a highly competitive job posting. Preference will be given to applicants who have recent experience in an acute care facility; specifically, those who have had specific experience within the last 3 years in General Internal Medicine.
